Getting the best Oracle API information with Swagger and a pinch of NodeJS by Léon Smiers

In a world full of API’s we need to have a way to understand the functionality and meaning of an API before we can start using it. In the Oracle Cloud world (SaaS, PaaS and IaaS) all (or at least most) API’s are defined as REST services, based upon a JSON structure.
Since there is no conformed standard between API delivering parties, different design frameworks are used, with OpenAPI Specification (Swagger), RAML and API Blueprint the most popular ones. Oracle is opting for the OpenAPI Specification, with the accompanying design tool Swagger, as the standard for their products.

Oracle combined all the tools and resources for Cloud and On-prem software in a developers website. On this website the API descriptions for all PaaS products can be found. Unfortunately the information provided in the API overviews are pretty minimal. The online Swagger editor is not helping either, with all sorts of warnings popping up. The Swagger locally used UI tool requires CORS enabled calls, so out-of-the-box is offering the support we need.

This blogpost is about adding the last step in order to get insight in the Oracle PaaS API definitions with the Swagger UI tool. With the help of NodeJS CORS is added to the PaaS API call, and delivers the insight we want!

OpenAPI specification and Swagger

The OpenAPI specification is described on the http://swagger.io/specification/ website and unfolds how both Design elements and Documentation are used to define an API. The entire structure of the API design is based upon JSON, though also YAML can be used as the underpinning language. Swagger supports this specification with a bunch of tools, that can be used both in-line and locally installed. Read the complete article here.

What is New for Integration Cloud Service 17.3.3 August 2017

“Guide me” visual overlays

When you initially log in to Oracle Integration Cloud Service, overlays are provided on many of the main pages. The overlays guide you on how to perform tasks such as getting started, creating connections, creating integrations, and so on. Click Got it to dismiss the overlays. To enable the overlays again, select Help > Guide Me from the username main menu at the top of the page. See Using Oracle Integration Cloud Service.

Preseeded samples

When you provision a new instance of Oracle Integration Cloud Service, several sample integrations are automatically included. These fully designed samples help you get up and running quickly and show you how easy it is to activate, invoke, and monitor an integration between endpoints. See Using Oracle Integration Cloud Service.

Oracle Recommendations Engine for faster data mapping

You can accept the target element recommendations of the recommendations engine when creating mappings. This eliminates the need to analyze and perform each individual source-to-target mapping. You must enable the Oracle Recommendations Engine to use this feature. See Using the Oracle Mapper.

On-premises connectivity agent enhancements

The following agent enhancements are provided:

· Installation is supported on Linux Server release OEL7.

· Authentication support is provided for outbound proxy access.

· Agent automatically stops polling decommissioned instances. A 24 hour period of inactivity occurs with the agent stopping polling altogether on the decommissioned instance.

· Notification emails can capture agent status.

· Performance and resiliency improvements are provided around quiescing endpoints when Oracle Integration Cloud Service is unavailable. Automatic unquiescing is provided when Oracle Integration Cloud Service becomes available. See Using Oracle Integration Cloud Service.

Orchestrated integration enhancements

The following orchestration enhancements are provided:

· The stage file action is provided to read (and remove any trailer), write, zip, unzip, and list files in a staged location known to Oracle Integration Cloud Service (for example, process each file downloaded by the FTP Adapter). This action is only for scheduled orchestrations. See Using Oracle Integration Cloud Service.

· The Read File in Segments option of the stage file action enables you to specify a file chunking size. Chunking files enables large files to be processed, one logical chunk at a time. This option is only for scheduled orchestrations. See Using Oracle Integration Cloud Service.

· The scope action is provided to manage a group of actions with a scope action. The scope action is essentially a collection of child actions and invokes that can have their own fault handlers. You can also catch faults in scopes. See Using Oracle Integration Cloud Service.

· The raise error action is provided to throw an error and send failed messages to the error hospital for further analysis. This action is only available inside a fault handler. See Using Oracle Integration Cloud Service.

· The logger action is provided to log messages to the activity stream and diagnostic logs by adding the logger action at any point in the integration. See Using Oracle Integration Cloud Service.

· The for-each action is enhanced to include a Process items in parallel option that enables you to concurrently process data in scheduled orchestrated integrations. See Using Oracle Integration Cloud Service.

· Updates to variables declared outside of the for-each action Process items in parallel option and the stage file action Read File in Segments operation are provided.

· The function call action is provided to add JavaScript functions to an integration. See Using Libraries to Manage Functions for Integrations and Adding a Function Call Action of Using Oracle Integration Cloud Service.

· Tracking support has been enhanced:

· Tracking support is provided for actions and global faults on the instance tracking pages and in the audit trail.

· Tracking support is provided for customizable fields.

· Tracking variables can be accessed and updated inside orchestrations.

· The activity stream is viewable on the Tracking Details page.

· The Tracking page shows tracking variables and the starting and ending times of an instance.

· Visual repositioning (move) of nodes in orchestrated integrations is provided. See Using Oracle Integration Cloud Service.

· Ability to define fault handlers for named business faults that are defined by any one of the invoked endpoints in the scope or globally. When you add invokes to a scope, the named faults associated with the invokes are added for selection to the Fault Handler section of the scope. These are faults that the invoke can handle. See Using Oracle Integration Cloud Service.

· Aggregation and sending of errors to external services is provided. Oracle Integration Cloud Service includes a predefined fault object for fault aggregation. This object enables you to catch and aggregate faults in the context of parallel processing in scheduled orchestrated integrations and to send these faults to an external service to define more granular error handling. Scheduler orchestration enhancements

The following scheduler enhancements are provided:

· Set schedule parameters that determine how to batch and read data received from a source location. You then use these parameter values downstream in the integration.

· Show the reason why a scheduled flow is not running (for example, blocked, waiting, ready, paused, or cancelling).

· Support multiple schedule frequencies for running integrations.

· Past and current runs are viewable from the Monitoring page. See Using Oracle Integration Cloud Service.

FTP Adapter enhancements

The following FTP Adapter enhancements are provided:

· Support for public key authentication.

· The following operations to perform on files when configuring the FTP Adapter in an orchestrated integration:

· Download File: Specify a directory to use for staged activity. Use this directory to stage large files for processing.

· List Files: List the names of the files in the input directory. See Configuring Connection Security and Configuring FTP Adapter Invoke Operations Properties of Using the FTP Adapter

SOAP Adapter

The following SOAP Adapter enhancements are provided:

· SAML token-based authentication support for protecting inbound SOAP endpoints. The SAML security policy is used to configure the SOAP Adapter as a trigger to enable asynchronous invocation and callback authentication from ERP/DOO services primarily.

· Exposure of asynchronous SOAP endpoints with callback support. This enables you to invoke SOAP web services that have an asynchronous interface – (request with an asynchronous callback). See Using the SOAP Adapter.

Oracle HCM Cloud Adapter

Oracle Global Human Resources Cloud delivers representational state transfer (REST) APIs to support your integration requirements. These REST APIs enable easy integration of data into new and existing business process flows. These are intended as user-friendly web services involving transactions of a smaller volume. The Oracle HCM Cloud Adapter now has native support for consuming these REST APIs. You can model Oracle Integration Cloud Service integrations to use Oracle HCM Cloud Adapter to create, update, delete, query, and perform various high-valued actions on a wide range of Oracle HCM resources.
