Red Summer School is on! – run a PaaS workshop for your university!

Want to recruit new employees? Want to try PaaS? Run a Summer School training like Link Consulting.

Link Consulting’s Red Summer School on Oracle technologies on the Cloud is on! Teams Alfa, Beta and Delta have been working hard, mentored by our BPM and ECM business manager, Oracle ACE Associate and founder of Red Mavericks, José Rodrigues.

Earlier on this week they learnt the concept of REST APIs using Postman and SoapUI and testing interaction with Twitter API.

They then started working on Database Cloud Service, creating the data model that supports the voting application they’ve started working on today (that allows people to choose the artists that will be performing at a given event – cool, right?) and displaying the REST services on the transactions of these data.

During the last couple of days José introduced students to Oracle ICS and PCS. They built integration between Custom REST API and Gmail API and also with Twitter, this time based on Oracle ICS, and created a simple business process for car loan approvals.

José is satisfied with his students’ motivation: “The students are experimenting these platforms for the first time and really seem to enjoy what they’re doing. At the moment they are starting to connect the pieces and are truly enthusiastic about it.”

You go, teams! It’s been a close race so far. Who will win it? Read the complete article here.

PCS Travel Request Management – Process Form Creation by Red Mavericks

clip_image001

The fourth video by Red Mavericks (http://www.redmavericks.com) addresses the use of Oracle’s Process Cloud Service to build and deploy a full working Business Travel Request application in 40 minutes.
This is the first of a series of 4 videos that will guide you through the application creation process of a BPM application, using near zero code, which makes it particularly suitable for Business Analysts to also be engaged.

For this part, the focus is on Process Form Design using Oracle’s PCS Web Form builder, i.e. the process diagram that will guide the application’s general behavior. The use case was made for Link Consulting’s (http://www.linkconsulting.com/oracle) Process Cloud Event, held on July 2015. Watch the video here.

Integration Cloud Service & Process Cloud Service – first impressions by Link Consulting

imageProcess Cloud Service

“During the Beta Program and some Oracle events, we had the pleasure to try out the new Oracle Process Cloud Service (PCS). PCS was a very pleasant surprise, with an improved overall User Interface geared towards business users ease of use (think Oracle BPM Process Composer but easier) and a thorough use of Oracle’s ALTA UI. The results were very impressive, as the  UI is not only more appealing, but also offers a guided experience, which prevents errors from the users and simplifies the design and deployment of Business Processes.

During our analysis and experiments with the product, there was another aspect that clearly stood out: The actual process management features, ranging  from Realtime KPI Management charts – similar to Oracle BAM, fully integrated and available from the get-go without any kind of configuration -, to full audit and history view capabilities, quickly enabling process manipulation and error handling, with a very shallow training curves from support. It’s really brilliant.

Finally, the ability to provision and have your own BPM platform almost immediately, fully secured in the cloud, will increase the ability to respond to market inputs and requests, giving further agility to Line of Business.

The pathway to self-servicing processes is laid out. Say goodbye to over complex BPM projects that cost several hundred thousand of euros. With Oracle PCS, time-to-market can be significantly reduced, with further commitment and involvement from the business areas, with . We highly recommend it.

Integration Cloud Service

“Oracle’s Integration Cloud Services (ICS) is Oracle’s tackle on simplifying IT integrations.

Many of the SOA integration patterns aren’t really used on most real life projects, with 20% of the patterns being used 80%+ of the times. With ICS, oracle concentrated on those most used integration patterns, and worked on a user interface that made it very easy to implement them. From a few tests we made, the actual training times to implement integrations decreased by significant amount, and ICS now has very cool features, such as a hint mode that “guesses” what data matches each side of the integration point and pre-builds those connections, thus further reducing the time needed to build an integration point.

Together with Oracle’s Process Cloud Service (PCS), Oracle now offers a comprehensive set of platforms, that can help your organization move to the cloud, building rich applications in record time, fully customized to your own requirements, and with seamless Cloud to On-Premise capabilities. You must try them both.

If you use it in the right way, ICS will give your IT department the edge and quick response your Line of Business always wanted to have.

The Analyst Method

clip_image002At Red Mavericks we like to exercise our creativity, do things out of the ordinary, but sometimes, we need to do things with a certain consistency, with a certain methodology. For instance, to pickup information from a plain English description into structured information we follow a certain method. Now, again, there are other ways to do it, but we like to do it like this.

We go through a series of steps:

  1. Identify the verbs in the process description
  2. Identify the nouns in the process description
  3. Identify decision words (if, then, else, while, when, until, or, and, not)
  4. Identify time associating words (after, before, during, at start, in the end, prior)
  5. Build a table with your findings, identifying for each finding their type(1, 2, 3, or 4) and try to answer the 3W1H (What, Who, When and How)

it may not seem like it at the moment, but 80% of what you need to know to model your process is right here. Now eliminate any repitions that mean the same. For instance, in the description you have “…The requester is presented with a message stating “We’re sorry but currently there aren’t any parking spaces available in the requested period. Would you care to leave us your contacts and we’ll try to arrange a parking space for you?”, together with 2 fields: e-mail and mobile number. If the requester chooses to submit the contact information…“. In this case keep only e.mail and mobile number, as the contact information already refers to these two fields.

I’ll let you do the work for now, and identify them for yourself. Come back in 10 minutes when you’re finished. clip_image003

10 Minutes

You should end up with a list similar to this one, give or take a few:

  1. Verbs – filling form, submitting form, check available spaces, returns message, submitting contact information, create a task, generate e-mail or SMS,
  2. Nouns – Request, Requester, Form, Name, Company Name, Period Date, Period Start Time, Period End Time, External Entity, Employee, Parking Space, Message, E-mail, Mobile Number, System, Task, Concierge
  3. Decisions – if there are any parking spaces, if the requester is NOT an Akino Fishing Co. employee, if the system returns that the requester can take parking space X, if the system returns that there are no spaces available, if the requester chooses to submit the contact information, “if they can, they’ll mark the task as OK”, “if they can’t, they’ll mark the task as NOT OK”, if the system doesn’t return anything
  4. Time Associations –  Read the complete article here.

SOA Governance Through Enterprise Architecture by Manuel Rosa and André de Oliveira Sampaio

rosa-sampaio-soa-gov-fig09Achieving a global enterprise architecture vision that provides mechanisms and tools to enrich the information required for application, process, and project portfolio management Downloads Oracle Enterprise Repository.

Abstract

The ownership cost of technology assets can, and usually does, become significant. The need to centralize, monitor and control the contribution of each technology asset becomes a paramount responsibility for most organizations.

In Service Oriented Architectures (SOA), it is vital to manage the service, the main component of this architectural strategy, and its components. The service’s reuse benefits can easily be diminished without correct analysis of its dependencies and impacts.

Using Oracle Enterprise Repository as the central point of SOA artifacts’ cataloguing makes it possible to obtain a holistic vision and develop synergies between different SOA assets, empowering their re-utilization and analyzing the impact on the organization caused by IT changes. When the SOA domain is considered, the issue of governance should therefore always come into play.

Although SOA governance and its tools are mandatory to achieve any measure of SOA success, their value still passes incognito in most organizations, mostly due to the lack of visibility and the detached view of the SOA initiatives. A number of problems jeopardize the visibility of these initiatives, primarily understanding and measuring the value of SOA governance and its contribution: SOA governance tools are usually inadequate for anyone outside of the technical domain (business analysts, project managers, or even some enterprise architects), and are especially harsh at the CxO level.

A governance strategy is fundamental for SOA and cannot be complete without a global enterprise architecture vision that provides mechanisms and tools to enrich the information required for application, process, and project portfolio management.

By creating a formal, common, representational model, a language (graphic and textual), and standard viewpoints, and by extending the basic capabilities of a SOA governance tool, we can leverage the information for a greater scope and number of analysis possibilities (e.g., time-based, dependency).

To tackle those challenges, Li

nk Consulting has brought Oracle Enterprise Repository’s main functionalities and its own Enterprise Architecture Management System (EAMS) together in a full SOA governance + enterprise architecture solution. The Enterprise Architecture Management System – Oracle Enterprise Edition combines the architecture management solution with Oracle Enterprise Repository to deliver a product specialized for SOA governance. It gathers the best of two worlds (SOA and EA) in a solution that enables SOA governance projects, initiatives and programs, and provides an easier mechanism for exchanging information with the business, other operational areas and project management.

In this article, we describe how an organization can leverage the best EA and SOA governance practices and, with the help of adequate exploration and communication tools (like Oracle Enterprise Repository and EAMS), achieve and maintain the level of quality and visibility that is required for SOA and SOA governance initiatives.
