Adaptive Case Management Methodology published in Best Practices for Knowledge Workers (digital edition)

image

Working on an Adaptive Case Management (ACM) opportunity? Read the ACM Methodology published in the Best Practices for Knowledge Workers (Digital edition) book.

BPM-based solutions have brought major advances to work organization and automation. However, given BPM’s strong basis on formal workflow definition, oftentimes BPM solutions are not well suited for work scenarios where a precise workflow cannot be strictly defined. Work in such scenarios is highly dependent on knowledge-based decisions about activities and outcomes, leading to multiple work paths and business rules that can become quite complex or even unfeasible to model and completely automate. In these cases, a different technology support approach is required. The focus is not to isolate and automate decisions and rules, but rather to deliver opportunistic information support to the knowledge worker to accomplish them. Adaptive Case Management (ACM) rises as a successful design pattern for this. Get the eBook here.

Case for case management by Leon Smiers

clip_image001A case for case management with Léon Smiers and Greger Wikstrand. They discuss BPM and case management, how they differ and how the complement each other. Léon also talks about why they wrote their latest book, Oracle Case Management Solutions and the benefits with case management.

Léon Smiers works as a Solution Architect for Capgemini, The Netherlands in the area of Oracle Technology and Architecture, where he is one of the leading Oracle specialists. He has done a lot of work and research in the field of integration and new technologies, like RFID, SOA, EDA, BPM, and case management, on which he wrote articles and presented at international conferences.

BPM Suite 12c: Oracle Adaptive Case Management: Monitoring Case Events by Maarten Smeets

clip_image002Adaptive Case Management (ACM) is an interesting addition to Oracle BPM Suite which has been introduced in 11.1.1.7. Adaptive Case Management is suitable to model complex work-flows in which there is no set order of activities taking place. This allows more control to the end user on what to do when.
When a case is started, it is a running process in the SOA infrastructure. The main component is Oracle Business Rules which governs (among other things) the availability of activities and when certain process milestones are achieved. The case API allows you to query the case events and milestones (how you can expose the API as a service is described here and here by Roger Goossens).
Sometimes people want to obtain information about cases such as;

  • in how many cases has a certain activity been executed?
  • in which cases has a certain milestone been reached?

Cases can crash, be restarted, migrated, aborted, purged, etc. Sometimes you might not want to depend on the running case being there to provide the information you want. Also using the API every time you want certain information might put a serious strain on your system. Using sensors or BAM might help but they require an investment to implement and are still manual implementations with no guarantee you can obtain information in the future you did not think you would need in the present/past.

Publish Case Events
Luckily Oracle has provided the perfect solution for monitoring case events! You can publish case events to the Event Delivery Network (read here 31.17.2 How to Publish Case Events). This can easily be monitored by for example a BPEL process, which can store the information in a custom table. Read the complete article here.

Oracle and Adaptive Case Management: Part 2 by Jan Kettenis

clip_image001This posting is the second of a series about Oracle Adaptive Case Management. The first one can be found here. I discuss the different options to define an activity, and the setting you can use to configure when and how activities are started.
There are two ways to implement an activity in ACM. The first one is by creating a Human Task and then "promote" it (as it is called) to an activity. The other way is to create a business process and promote that as an activity. As far as I know there are also plans to use a BPEL process to implement an activity, but that option is not there yet.
When using a Human Task the limitations of it (obviously) are that of a human task, meaning that the means to do some to do some pre- or post-processing for the activity are very limited. There are only a few hooks for Java call outs and XPath expressions, but as processing of that happens on the Human Workflow Engine this won’t show up in Enterprise Manager, and error handling will be hard if not impossible. So, when you for example need to call a service before or after a human task (like sending a notification email) you better use a process. Read the complete article here.

Oracle and Adaptive Case Management: Part 1 by Jan Kettenis

clip_image001In this blog posting I address four key concepts that are used in Oracle Adaptive Case Management, or ACM for short. This article is the first in a series on ACM.
Recently I was involved in an Oracle Adaptive Case Management (ACM) project. Although some people involved knew about case management in general, it turned out that not everyone immediately understood how case management works with Oracle ACM. As you may be one of them, I will walk you through some of the concepts, using a format that differs from what I have seen so far, and seemed to work well for my audience.
I will not discuss the more general concept of case management. There are sufficient other references that probably do a better job than I could (for example Case Management Model and Notation, or CMMN for short, as defined by the Object Management Group ). For this article I will restrict myself to explaining that, unlike a “normal” BPMN process, case management supports a much more flexible “flow” of a process, for example supporting paths (flows) that were not thought of before, activity types that were not identified before, as well as stakeholders that were not known yet during the initial design. The “A” of Adaptive in ACM refers to the fact that some of this behavior can be configured run-time (after the system is out of development). Read the complete article here.

How to fix java.io.InvalidClassException error when accessing Oracle ACM Case API via Jdeveloper by Vikram Bailur

clip_image002Here is a quick and useful tip. This was an error I got when I was running a custom java client to query the Oracle Adaptive Case Management API.

From a sort-of related metalink on Oracle which says :

Although the problem couldn’t be recreated by the development team on demand, from the exception is clear that the root cause of the problem is the differnce of the version of the org.eclipse.persistence jar distributed with Oracle JDeveloper and Oracle WLS.

I figured this was something to do with the version of eclipselink libraries currently running on the soa server were different from Jdeveloper install.

In my JDeveloper project, I had some libraries and classpath pointing to my JDeveloper install and some others pointing to my SOA middleware home install for example. Read the complete article here.

Invoking REST Service from Oracle ACM Java Activity by Andrejus Baranovskis

clip_image002In this post I will show you, how to call REST service from ACM Java activity class method. This could be useful in the situations, when you would like to have programmatic ACM activity integrated with REST service data. We could access ACM payload data from within the method overriden in the class implementing Case Activity Callback.

ACM activity implemented on top of Java class, contains the same properties and configuration as the regular one. You could define input/output data, execution properties, etc.:

Here is the Java code to invoke REST service from the Java class implementing ACM activity. I’m giving an example to parse ACM payload and access Last Name attribute. REST service is invoked through a library packaged with FMW 12c: Read the complete article here.

It’s Spring for Oracle ACM API’s by Martien van den Akker

clip_image002Before the holiday season I was working on a service to receive e-mails in BPM using the UMS-email-adapter. Then process the attachments and the body and upload them to the Oracle ACM-case the email was meant for.
I won’t get in too much detail here, since there are some articles on the use of ACM-API’s like the ones of Niall Comminsky.
Unfortunately, until now, there are no WSDL/SOAP or REST services available on the ACM-API’s, as they are on the Workflow Task API’s. However, it is not so hard to make the API’s available as services. The trick is to wrap them up in a set of Java-beans, with one class with methods that do the jobs and create ‘request and response beans’ for the input parameters of the methods and the response.
A few years ago I wrote an article on using Spring components in SOA Suite 11g. This approach is still perfectly usable for SOA/BPM12c. And gives you a WSDL interface on the API’s in near to no time.
There is one remark on the API’s, though. That is on the creation of the the ACM Stream Service, or actually the creation of the BPMServiceClientFactory to get the context. In the blog of Niall you’ll read that you need to set the following context-properties: Read the complete article here.
