PaaS Services Explained: The Most Common SaaS Use Cases by Richard Bingham

image

Introduction

This article summarizes our selection of the Oracle Cloud Platform Services (PaaS) with specific focus on use with an existing Oracle Cloud Applications (SaaS) environment. In other content the term PaaS4SaaS has been used for this context.

This is the first of a series of articles in which we will use examples to demonstrate some of the key functions and features inside the Oracle PaaS services, and indeed many will be derived from real implementations. Again the focus is on getting value for use with an existing Oracle Fusion Cloud (SaaS) environment, as opposed to a general feature overview.

Clearly all services evolve of time, and as such the information provided is accurate at the time of writing, and where possible links to updated content will be provided.

Use-Cases

In order to organize this series of articles, and at the same time portray the most-common use of each of the services, we’ve selected the following four broad categories within which to place each of the PaaS service offerings.

  • Build custom extension applications
  • Host your existing extension applications
  • Integrate your existing custom and packaged applications
  • Enhance your solution by adding ready-to-go features.

Obviously there may be some overlap between categories with some services. The following table shows how the PaaS Services which are mostly likely to complement a SaaS environment fit into the categories above. Read the complete article here.

NEW ERP POST ON FORBES.COM

image

Enterprise resource planning applications are highly complex systems. But the navigation and overall user experience should be as simple as possible. Oracle Thought Leader Jeremy Ashley, the Oracle Applications User Experience (OAUX) Group Vice President, writes about the Oracle ERP Cloud in OracleVoice: ERP UX Must Be Simple, Even When The Data Is Complex.

BEHIND THE ‘WOW’ OF THE SMART OFFICE: Noel Portugal, from the AppsLab, the OAUX emerging technologies team, writes about what you can see if you catch the Smart Office demo right now in “The Future of Work: What does a Smart Office look like today?” For a look at the emerging technology research behind all of the cool things you can see, visit the UsableApps Storify page for a new post, “Building a "smart office" with today’s emerging technology.”

AUGMENTING REALITY: Oh wait, there’s more news from the emerging technology team! In a new post on the Voice of User Experience, or VoX, blog, “Teaching old(er) emerging-tech dogs new tricks” we talk about augmented reality and visualizations. And context. And, of course, user experience.

CLOUD UX RAPID DEVELOPMENT KIT (RDK): Developer Timo Hahn’s JDev and ADF Goodies blog posts about using the OAUX team’s Cloud UX RDK with Oracle Development Cloud Service for continuous integration. This is a four-part (!) blog series based on the DOAG DevCamp 2016 session on how to use the service, says Oracle’s Ultan O’Broin.

WHERE HAVE WE BEEN LATELY? It’s been a globe-trotting spring. For more on what we did and where – from demos to feedback sessions to presentations – check the following posts for the details.
