Check the Voice of User Experience, or VoX, blog to see how you can share your perspective  about mobile use with Oracle’s Applications User Experience team. Please complete the survey before March 28.

USER EXPERIENCE SPECIALIST ROLE: We now have a UX Guided Learning Path live on the Oracle Partner Network. Oracle has just created a new User Experience Specialist role for Oracle Cloud Partners to better enable them to sell the Oracle Applications Cloud.  It is composed of a guided learning path targeted at sales and pre-sales roles to learn about Oracle’s investment in UX for cloud, and how to position the benefits.  The guided learning path and associated assessment is available online via OPN.
HARVARD TEAMS UP WITH UX DIRECT: Read about how OUAB member Harvard University uses UX Direct for their new PeopleSoft Campus Solutions  in this post on the VoX blog.  UX Direct helps partners and customers build in user experience best practices, using the same methods that the Oracle Applications User Experience team uses for Oracle software. Harvard is a member of the Oracle Usability Advisory Board (OUAB), which is also one of the Oracle Applications User Experience team’s programs.
DOING OUR HOMEWORK: Head to the Voice of User Experience, or VoX, blog for a post on how “New Oracle developers get a taste of Raspberry Pi.” By holding occasional hack days, Oracle’s own developers get a chance to play around with new, or new-to-them, technology and think about how to apply that technology to the business world and its users. Then check in at the AppsLab for a post on how some of the Oracle Applications User Experience developers applied Raspberry Pi for a project of their own in “New Robot Arm Hotness,” an example of how the innovation is always ongoing.
WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY USER EXPERIENCE: Check the Usable Apps blog for a new post about a wearables jam held recently for developers on the Oracle Applications User Experience team, where participants took their cue from Mickey Mouse, in “Learning to Build a Wearables User Experience from Mickey Mouse.” Hear more of the story (and check out author Ultan O’Broin’s fuzzy ears) in “It’s Not How You Wink, It’s How You Work,” on the User Assistance blog.
GAME-CHANGER FOR FINANCIALS DEPARTMENT: Oracle’s Ultan O’Broin takes a look at how Oracle Social Network can improve the user experience for financial applications users in “How to Chat Up an Accountant Safely: Social Networking in the Finance Department,” on the Usable Apps blog.

Exploring new user experience concepts
Oracle invests a great deal in creating a user experience for its applications that empowers customers to be more productive and efficient. One way that investment is made is by exploring new technologies and looking for ways to use them so that the Oracle user experience continues to evolve. Much of that research takes place among the ranks of the Oracle Applications User Experience (UX) team.

Recent posts on the Usable Apps blog and on TheAppsLab blog look at what and how members of the Applications UX team are exploring new concepts. We invite you to join the conversation! Tell us about your experiences with new technology, and how you think they could be used. To read more about what we’ve found, head over to the Usable Apps blog for new posts on Voice, social network integration, and Google Glass. Then check out Jake Kuramoto’s new post about exploring new concepts on TheAppsLab blog.

How to Avoid the Perils of Patchwork Cloud Integration

Alignment between IT and business has hovered near the top of “Top CIO Priorities” surveys for years – but this elusive goal can be difficult to attain. The accelerating pace of business change and the exploding rate of technology innovation only make matters worse, as does the fact that business strategies and goals vary by functional perspectives, making IT-business alignment a multivariable equation.
Lines of business (marketing, sales, etc.) are increasingly bypassing IT to strike independent deals with cloud application providers, eventually forcing IT to integrate outside of IT best practices, resulting in a disparate, patchwork integration. These ad hoc architectures become more complex, more costly, and less agile than well-planned architectures with continual collaboration between IT and business.
“A successful cloud integration strategy requires executive sponsorship of IT involvement in all cloud application purchases. Furthermore, cloud integration goes well beyond simple point-to-point connectivity,” says Oracle Senior Principal Product Marketing Director Bruce Tierney. “To solve this issue, you need to enable a diverse set of connectivity options to a common platform that can seamlessly bridge dissimilar technologies in a consistent way when moving between the on-premises world and cloud environments.”
Oracle’s SOA-based integration platform, Oracle Service-Oriented Architecture, provides a comprehensive and flexible platform that allows companies to avoid a complex array of disparate integration tools and standards and is fundamental to Oracle’s cloud integration solution. Tierney says that one of the most efficient ways to create a cloud integration strategy is through Oracle AppAdvantage, a program that helps Oracle enterprise applications customers use Oracle Fusion Middleware to integrate, extend, configure, and secure their investments across all applications.
For example, when it comes to cloud integration, Oracle AppAdvantage guides companies through the process of moving business processes that are unique to individual lines of business or that frequently change out of core enterprise applications and onto a middleware layer that leverages open, standards-based integration and cross-application business process management. “It helps customers manage the scale of integration across on-premises and cloud applications, helping companies build agile, responsive business applications,” Tierney says.
Dive deeper into the details of IT-business alignment. Read the new white paper, “IT-Business Alignment: Why We Stumble and the Path Forward.”

The AppAdvantage of Oracle Cloud & On-premises Integration by Bruce Tierney

Are you an Oracle application customer wondering?

“How do I avoid a nightmare of complexity while expanding my application integration infrastructure from on-premises to a hybrid mix of cloud and on-premises?”

If so, your awareness of the complexity that results when departments develop a growing patchwork of cloud integrations independent from a cohesive enterprise strategy, is an important first step. This naturally evolving complexity, known as the “Accidental Cloud Architecture” returns enterprises to the painful pre-SOA days of point-to-point integration. Much has been written on this phenomenon including a recent Forrester report (“The Hybrid2 Integration Challenge” by Stefan Ried, PH.D., May 1 2013) which states:

“…the existing integration tool landscape at most large enterprises is simply too varied and disparate to support full implementation of a digital business design strategy” .

Disparate ToolkitsThe image below shows a visual description of the challenge of managing a growing collection of disparate integration toolkits and their associated disparate standards and non-standards.

Oracle’s solution to simplifying the complexity of cloud and on-premises integration is based on removing the distinction between cloud and on-premises integration with a unified approach to integration regardless of deployment location. As shown in the image below, this includes a single standards-based toolkit (using Java, BPEL, etc.) across all applications.

Unfied ToolkitsIn addition to the simplified complexity of a unified approach to integration, the following additional features describe the AppAdvantage that Oracle customer’s benefit from when using Oracle Fusion Middleware to integrate Oracle applications.

  • Developed by Oracle Application Software Developers – When using Oracle SOA Suite to integrate with Oracle E-Business Suite, the implementation for selecting application data was developed by the Oracle E-Business Suite software development team for Oracle SOA Suite. This close level of collaboration between Oracle’s application and integration teams minimizes risk by providing you a fully integrated and application version-aware integration solution.
  • Oracle Fusion Applications are Pre-integrated with Oracle SOA Suite – Oracle Fusion Applications already include the core features of Oracle SOA Suite such as the BPEL Process Manager for orchestrating flow between applications and other data stores. When you are ready to expand your integration into an unified platform across your enterprise, you are simply extending the foundation embedded within Oracle Fusion applications.
  • Common Policy Management Between Oracle Fusion Applications & Oracle SOA Suite – Instead of one policy management implementation for your applications and another for your integration platform, Oracle Fusion Applications shares the same Oracle Web Services Management policy management solution with Oracle SOA Suite which simplifies complexity and reduces time to integrate. Policy management for signing messages, performing encryption, authentication, and role-based access control is greatly simplified. Furthermore, changing policies is done independent of the end-points (such as services) so you have greater flexibility and security throughout your enterprise.
  • Mobile-ready Application Enablement & Integration – Instead of splintering off a new mobile enablement and integration platform that will eventually require some form of integration with your enterprise integration platform, Oracle SOA Suite spans the needs of the enterprise developer building SOAP-based services as well as newer mobile application enablement with RESTful services within Oracle SOA Suite’s enterprise service bus, known as Oracle Service Bus.  Your enterprise developers can immediately expose services for mobile, cloud, and whatever comes next with this unified approach to integration.

For more information on Oracle’s solution to simplifying hybrid cloud integration complexity, download the white paper "Cloud Integration – A Comprehensive Solution".
