Emerging Tech and the Enterprise

clip_image002:Wearables — your Apple Watches, Fitbits, and Misfits — are finally coming out to play in the world of enterprise applications. The Internet of Things (IoT) is also changing the game, so adopting a smart strategy is key. If you haven’t yet, check out this post on the Voice of User Experience (VoX) blog, “Wearables, IoT push Oracle’s emerging tech development.”

Enterprise use cases can be hard to come by for some technologies, such as voice and gesture as input, but Oracle needs to keep up with the latest developments in those fields anyway so that we’re ready when an enterprise use case comes up. Another post on VoX, “New ways of input still on the verge of the enterprise,” explains how we’re doing that.

Interested in how we research, design, and develop for these emerging technologies? We’ve got three new emerging tech articles that describe the challenges and provide insight into how the Oracle Applications User Experience (OAUX) team gets it done. For a look at how this technology influences Oracle’s cloud user experience strategy, head to this recently updated article from Jake Kuramoto, director of the AppsLab, the OAUX Emerging Technologies team.

PLATFORM FOR JEREMY ASHLEY: The OAUX Group Vice President has two new pages live on Oracle.com. You will find him among Oracle’s Thought Leaders, and he’s also listed as a corporate spokesperson for North America.

This is part of an ongoing effort to give Ashley a platform as a Thought Leader at Oracle. Since mid-2015, he’s been publishing on a variety of topics related to user experience and design on Forbes.com. He’s been speaking at events around the globe, and a new push is being made to capture the recognition his team deserves for their hard work on the Cloud user experience. Jeremy’s Thought Leader page contains several links to recent key posts on Forbes.com, links to Jeremy’s LinkedIn profile and Twitter feed, videos in which he shares his perspective on innovation and user experience, and links to the Usable Apps website and the VoX blog, where you can find posts and articles from many members of the OAUX team on projects you’ve all had a hand in.

The Oracle Applications User Experience (OAUX) team has loads of new content that we’re eager to share

clip_image002The Oracle Applications User Experience (OAUX) team has loads of new content that we’re eager to share. Beginning with Oracle Voice, Oracle’s platform on Forbes.com, Group Vice President Jeremy Ashley describes in a recent post how Oracle is addressing specific HCM trends and issues in our cloud application services while keeping that “suite” perspective. What else did we write about in the past month?

LOOKING TO THE ENTERPRISE FUTURE: The OAUX team reports on wearables and IoT devices as well as Oracle’s investment in the challenges of bringing them to the enterprise in a new post on the Voice of User Experience (VoX) blog. Wearables lie at the center of many IoT discussions, and the possibilities they create when they work in tandem are endless. The OAUX team has been keeping an eye on both areas for several years and is investing heavily in research and development behind the challenges of interweaving the capabilities of both types of devices and bringing them to the enterprise.

UX STRATEGY: We know you’re craving the latest in Oracle’s UX strategy, and we must deliver. Learn more in a new VoX post with a bird’s-eye view on our new strategy ebook, or dive right into the (free!) download.

NEW TO DO AND SEE: If you’re an Oracle partner, we’ve got some updates just for you. Check the recently refreshed For Partners page featuring Release 10 content. Want to come to one of our partner events? We’ve got you covered on our Events page. Finally, we’re also bringing you a new Cloud User Experience Specialist Role, freshened up for Release 10. Find out more here.

RDK: We recently announced updates to the Cloud UX Rapid Development Kit (RDK) on the Usable Apps website, and we’re so excited by it that we’re still talking about it. Check out the following posts:

  • Get a tour of the Cloud UX Rapid Development Kit for Release 10 in Overview of the PaaS4SaaS User Experience RDK, including the new Microsoft PowerPoint-based wireframing tools and the software templates and components that are available for developers on OTN and GitHub.

Applications User Experience OpenWorld 2016 results

image

See what the Oracle Applications User Experience (#OAUX) team did during Oracle OpenWorld 2016 in San Francisco in September on the Voice of User Experience blog, or VoX, where we’ve reposted our most recent Storify collection. Here’s a short summary of the big stuff:

 The OAUX Cloud Exchange, where the OAUX team demos near-future and future concepts, was extended to three days this year. Participants included Oracle partners, industry analysts, private customer tours, global media, legislators learning about technology, and a robot, which was part of an emerging technologies demo on virtual reality.

 Several Cloud UX demos and messages popped up in general sessions, like the Oracle ERP Cloud. The simplified UI designs central to the Cloud user experience were a new and exciting story to share with ERP customers, so we saw it in several sessions. For more user experience excitement, this time in the Oracle HCM Cloud general session, check out this tweet showing a voice demo from the OAUX team. (The audience actually applauded.)

 About 250 people came through lab tours at Oracle Headquarters in Redwood Shores, Calif., and nearly 100 customers and partners participated in customer feedback sessions, focus groups and a design jam at the onsite lab.

 A new UX Rapid Development Kit (RDK) was also announced in time for OpenWorld. Read about what’s available now in this post on the Usable Apps blog.

 The OAUX IoT workshops, a joint project with the Oracle Technology Network (OTN), pulled in about 200 people who attended workshops during three days at both JavaOne and OpenWorld conferences. More tweets are on Twitter, including a short video by ACE Director Tim Hall, who is using the chip that the AppsLab, the OAUX emerging technologies team, provided post-show. He also wrote about it in this post. The AppsLab team wrote about their experiences on their blog as well.

ORACLE HCM CLOUD: In September Aylin Uysal, Senior Director, HCM User Experience, was part of an Oracle Partner Network Partner Cast. She discussed Oracle’s HCM UX strategy with host Jonathan Vinoskey, Director of Global Partner Enablement, HCM Cloud, Oracle Sales and Partner Academy.

Aylin also points to a recent video from industry analyst Holger Mueller from the Constellation Group, where he talks about what makes a great user experience.

STRATEGY DAY WITH ACE DIRECTORS: During OpenWorld, the OAUX team held a special Strategy Day for several hand-picked ACE Directors who are interested in the Oracle cloud user experience. For a look at what they took away from that daylong meeting, read these posts:

Oracle’s UX strategy: See where it’s heading on the VoX blog

clip_image002Want a preview of what Jeremy Ashley, Oracle Applications User Experience (OAUX) Group Vice President, will say at Oracle OpenWorld 2015 in October? Three new posts on the Oracle UX strategy have been published on the Voice of User Experience, or VoX, blog to give you just that.

Going Beyond the Notification: Transitioning With the Evolving Enterprise

In the first article of our strategy series, we talk about the transition of the enterprise — the changing workforce, the increasing mobility — and decipher how the user experience of the Oracle Applications Cloud is transitioning with it. Wondering when the innovation will reach your company’s Oracle applications system and affect you, or how much it’s all going to cost? Look no further. This transition doesn’t have to hurt.

Big-Picture Innovation on the Path to a Better User Experience

In our second strategy post, we focus on the theme of mobility alongside the theme of simplicity and discuss where we get our inspiration. All of Oracle’s user experience projects are based on innovation, understanding the most important aspect of a task, and helping improve efficiency and productivity. If you want to know how we’re innovating and what we’re researching, read on. Emerging technology is only the beginning.

Consistency, Context, Convenience, Participation? Check!

Our third strategy post digs into specifics and discusses the challenges and opportunities Oracle’s R&D team is facing in order to design that mobile user experience. You know that if users don’t like the system, they won’t use it, so what do we need to do to maximize participation? You won’t want to miss this.

New content for partners

The UX PaaS4SaaS: Enabling Oracle Applications Cloud Partner Confidence social story tells how partners and customers use Oracle PaaS to build SaaS integrations focused on a quality user experience, to innovate in the Cloud and benefit their businesses. Find out how the Oracle Applications User Experience team’s Rapid Development Kit (RDK) lets partners differentiate and build modern, must-have user experiences for the Oracle Applications Cloud. And hear what industry thought leaders have to say about building modern apps in faster and smarter ways by using Oracle UX and the Cloud toolkit.

Visit Oracle University for a new webcast for partners, “Oracle Applications Cloud User Experience Innovations: Visualizations.” The webcast is also available via Customer Connect playback.

Check the UsableApps YouTube channel for a new playlist, “We recommend watching this …” It has some new customer perspective videos and a new demo of Glance, an app we’re developing for wearables based on the “Glance, Scan, Commit” design philosophy. To read more about what’s behind the Glance step, visit the AppsLab blog for a post called “A Framework for Wearables, Glance.”

Ultan O’Broin, with the OAUX Communications & Outreach team, writes on the Usable Apps blog that the ERP user experience is no longer just icing on the cake. It’s central to user happiness and business productivity, satisfying that ever-ravenous appetite for consumerlike apps in the enterprise. Read his post, “From Cupcakes to the Cloud: Oracle ERP User Experience Bakes In Exceedingly Better Business*,” for more.

Finally, Gretchen Alarcon, Group Vice President, Product Strategy, takes a look at what’s coming for the Oracle HCM Cloud in Oracle Applications Release 10 Spotlight on HCM Cloud, a new video on YouTube.

On wearables, IoT, and how they fit into Oracle’s UX strategy

clip_image001

There’s a lot to be excited about on the emerging technology front right now, especially around wearables. Oracle’s investment in user experience around emerging technology — what we’re researching, how we think wearables and other new technology like the Internet of Things (IoT) could fit into the enterprise world, and defining Oracle’s strategy in user experience going forward — is a major focus for us now and in coming months.

You may have seen The AppsLab’s post on the Apple Watch, The Apple Watch Arrives, in this space last month. We also talked about how the Oracle Applications User Experience (OAUX) design philosophy of “Glance, Scan, Commit” fits the wearables model on the Usable Apps blog. We’ve had some more time to sit with it all. Take a look at these new posts on — of course — the Apple Watch, as well as other devices that can activate the Internet of Things.

We also have a free ebook, in which you can get a strategic look at the roadmap for the Oracle Applications Cloud. Download your copy today.
