The Successful Execution of the SOA and BPM Vision Using a Business Capability Framework: Concepts and Examples

Speaker: Clemens Utschig-Utschig, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma GmbH & CoKG and Manas Deb, Oracle

At a basic level, SOA advocates software development using self-sustaining packages of IT assets, aka “services”. Each of these services typically represents a unit of business functionality. Similarly, Business Process Management (BPM) focuses on the comprehensive discipline of creating, managing and improving “business processes” which are articulations of (business) activities that help a business function.

A business process often needs services for its execution; a service can sometime include one or more business processes. Thus, relevance of SOA and BPM to the success of a business is immediate and obvious. In fact, over the last decade, a great amount of attention and effort have been dedicated by businesses and technologists to derive substantial benefit from SOA + BPM vision. However, the yield has been quite uneven across companies attempting this combined adoption. Some are enjoying superior competitive advantages, while others have only garnered modest ROIs.

In this fast-paced presentation, author Clemens Utschig-Utschig and Manas Deb explain how ne of the key reasons for low returns from combined SOA and BPM adoption has been the lack of focus on “business capabilities”. Strategies are conceived in order to achieve the goals and objectives of a business; for successful execution of a strategy a set of accurate and well-defined business capabilities is necessary. Using conceptual discussions and examples from the industry, this presentation will explain how business capabilities are related to business strategy execution, and in turn how SOA and BPM adoption can build upon and improve such business capabilities.

Clemens Utschig-Utschig works for Boehringer-Ingelheim′s Global Business Services (GBS) as Chief Architect, helping to establish GBS′ next gen′ business architecture based on service orientation. Before joining BI he worked at the Oracle Headquarters in the United States as platform architect, working with the Fusion Applications development as advisor and supported customers all around the world on their journey towards implementing enterprise-wide SOA. During his platform engineering years, Clemens was responsible for cross product integration, strategic standards as well as a member to the Oracle′s SOA platform steering committee, and served on the OASIS TC for Service Component Architecture (SCA).

In 2006 Clemens co-founded the “Masons-of-SOA“, an inter-company network founded by architects of Oracle Germany, Opitz, SOPERA (Eclipse Project Swordfish founders) and EDS, with the mission of spreading knowledge, fostering discussion and supporting SOA programs across companies and borders. After 14 articles on advanced SOA topics in the German Java Magazin, a three patterns in Thomas Erl′s SOA Design Patterns catalogue, they are currently working on “Next Generation SOA” – slated to release as part of the Service Oriented Computing Series of Prentice Hall for late 2010. Clemens is also a co-author of the SOA Manifesto.

Dr. Manas Deb is a Senior Director in the Fusion Middleware/SOA+BPM+Governance Suites Group at Oracle HQ. He currently leads strategic engagement initiatives for Oracle’s service-oriented integration and BPM solutions worldwide. He is also responsible for Oracle’s SOA methodology initiatives. Manas has worked in the software industry for over 20 years, most of which was spent in software product management/marketing and on architecting and leading a wide variety of enterprise-level application development and business integrations projects in a wide variety of industries. He attended post-graduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin. He has a PhD in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, as well as an MBA. Click Here to View Speaker Profile

Process Accelerator Kit

Oracle is very interested to co-develop and market with you, our partners, pre-defined processes for BPM Suite.
I am very happy to announce a new program called “Oracle BPM Partner Solution Catalog”. This program will provide a one-stop shop for our customers looking for Oracle BPM partner solutions available in the market today.
The Oracle BPM Solution Catalog will be hosted on our very popular Oracle Technology Network (OTN). To give you an idea of the scale of customer visibility, OTN today receives over 1Million hits per day from our business and developer community. We would like to invite you to list your Oracle BPM 11g solutions available today.
In order to participate in this program, you need to do the following:

  • Fill in the attached slide templates – #3 and #4 for each Oracle BPM 11g solution you would like to list on OTN.
Please add links to whitepapers , videos, references to the specific solution in the template slide. We recommend that you create a landing page on your website for these linked artifacts and just point to the same from within the PowerPoint template. This will give you the flexibility to update the information as frequently as needed. If you have the particular solution in production or a reference available, please list them as well.
  • Send the PowerPoint template slides (1 set of slides for each Oracle BPM solution) to Payal.srivastava@oracle.com.

In addition to having the opportunity to list your solutions on OTN for Oracle customers, you will have the chance to advertise your new wins/implementations/solutions in an Oracle Sponsored PM Webinar held every quarter.

This program is targeted to go live by the end of summer 2012. At this point, we are targeting a soft launch in July end 2012 so send on your BPM solutions information as soon as possible. We would love to have your solution(s) listed in the “Oracle BPM Partner Solution Catalog” at the time of the launch. This will be a live repository so you can keep adding more solutions as they become available.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us Payal.srivastava@oracle.com, Product Strategy Director, Oracle BPM , Phone +1 650.506.5486.
Thank you and look forward to hearing from you.

Big Data with CEP and SOA – September 25, 2012 – 14:15

Speaker: Markus Zirn, Oracle

and Baz Kuthi, Avocent

The “Big Data” trend is driving new kinds of IT projects that process machine-generated data. Such projects store and mine using Hadoop/ Map Reduce, but they also analyze streaming data via event-driven patterns, which can be called “Fast Data” complementary to “Big Data”. This session highlights how “Big Data” and “Fast Data” design patterns can be combined with SOA design principles into modern, event-driven architectures. We will describe specific architectures that combines CEP, Distributed Caching, Event-driven Network, SOA Composites, Application Development Framework, as well as Hadoop. Architecture patterns include pre-processing and filtering event streams as close as possible to the event source, in memory master data for event pattern matching, event-driven user interfaces as well as distributed event processing. Focus is on how “Fast Data” requirements are elegantly integrated into a traditional SOA architecture.

Markus Zirn is Vice President of Product Management covering Oracle SOA Suite, SOA Governance, Application Integration Architecture, BPM, BPM Solutions, Complex Event Processing and UPK, an end user learning solution. He is the author of “The BPEL Cookbook” (rated best book on Services Oriented Architecture in 2007) as well as “Fusion Middleware Patterns”.

Previously, he was a management consultant with Booz Allen & Hamilton’s High Tech practice in Duesseldorf as well as San Francisco and Vice President of Product Marketing at QUIQ. Mr. Zirn holds a Masters of Electrical Engineering from the University of Karlsruhe and is an alumnus of the Tripartite program, a joint European degree from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, the University of Southampton, UK, and ESIEE, France.

BPM Standard Edition – to start your BPM project

Oracle have launched the new BPM Standard Edition. BPM Standard Edition is an entry level BPM offering designed to help organisations implement their first few processes in order to prove the value of BPM within their own organisation. Based on the highly regarded BPM Suite, BPM SE is a restricted use license that is licensed on a Named User basis. This new commercial offering gives Partners and Oracle the opportunity to address new markets and fast track adoption of Oracle BPM by starting small and proving the Return on Investment by working closely with our Customers. This is a great opportunity for Partners to use BPM SE as a core element of your own BPM ‘go to market’ value propositions. Please contact either Juergen Kress or Mike Connaughton if you would like to make these value propositions available to the Oracle Field Sales organisation and to advertise them on the EMEA BPM intranet.
