DevCamp 2017: How much cost the Oracle Cloud? by Timo Hahn

image

February 7th, I attended the DOAG Dev Camp 2017 in Hannover, Germany. The DevCamp is held in a ‘Bar Camp’ format, meaning that everybody can bring proposals for sessions at the day the bar camp takes place. The proposals are rated at the beginning and the auditorium can decide if they want to discuss the proposal or not.

I pitched a session on the ‘Cost of the Oracle Cloud’ which was accepted by the other attendees. At the begin of the week (around 5th of February) Oracle changed the pricing of the Oracle Cloud Trials. Before this week you could get a trail which lasted one month, now you get a credit of 300$ which you can spend on Oracles Cloud offerings in one month. Once the 300$ are gone or the month is over you get a mail asking if you like to continue to use the cloud services which are then charged on your credit card. Yes, you have to give a valid credit card if you sign up for a trail. The card is not charged until you say so, accepting the continuation of the services.

Gone are the time when you could request another trail account using a different mail address (not that anybody did such a bad thing).

Anyway, I stumbled over this change when I look at the cloud.oracle.com page in preparation of the session I planned for the DevCamp.

Well, you see that you get 300$ to spend on the cloud trail, but not how much a specific trail costs. From my experience with the cloud I know that you need DB Cloud, Storage Cloud, Compute Cloud and Java Cloud to get a Java Development environment for ADF in the cloud. Are the 300$ enough to get all those services for a decent amount of time? Read the complete article here.

CI, DevOps and ALM for Oracle SOA Suite with Oracle Developer Cloud Service by Shay Shmeltzer

imageWe have a lot of developers who are using JDeveloper to develop applications with Oracle SOA Suite, and in this blog I wanted to show them how the combination of JDeveloper along with Oracle Developer Cloud Service can help automate their whole development and delivery lifecycle.

One unique aspect of Developer Cloud Service is that it has an instance of JDeveloper available in the build environment. This allows customers who are building Oracle SOA artifacts to leverage the OJDeploy mechanism to package their applications as part of a continuous integration cycle just like they do during development time.

With the improved DevCS integration that we added in JDeveloper 12.2.1, developers can go beyond integration with the Git server offered by DevCS and can now interact with the DevCS task tracking system directly as well as associate code changes to specific tasks they are working on.

In this 10 minutes video I show:

  • Creating Ant based builds for Oracle SOA artifacts
  • Automating Continuous Integration build and packaging for Oracle SOA from Developer Cloud Service
  • Managing SOA project code with Git and Developer Cloud Service
  • Tracking tasks from JDeveloper and monitor agile development in Developer Cloud Service
  • Read the complete article here.

PaaS Services Explained: The Most Common SaaS Use Cases by Richard Bingham

image

Introduction

This article summarizes our selection of the Oracle Cloud Platform Services (PaaS) with specific focus on use with an existing Oracle Cloud Applications (SaaS) environment. In other content the term PaaS4SaaS has been used for this context.

This is the first of a series of articles in which we will use examples to demonstrate some of the key functions and features inside the Oracle PaaS services, and indeed many will be derived from real implementations. Again the focus is on getting value for use with an existing Oracle Fusion Cloud (SaaS) environment, as opposed to a general feature overview.

Clearly all services evolve of time, and as such the information provided is accurate at the time of writing, and where possible links to updated content will be provided.

Use-Cases

In order to organize this series of articles, and at the same time portray the most-common use of each of the services, we’ve selected the following four broad categories within which to place each of the PaaS service offerings.

  • Build custom extension applications
  • Host your existing extension applications
  • Integrate your existing custom and packaged applications
  • Enhance your solution by adding ready-to-go features.

Obviously there may be some overlap between categories with some services. The following table shows how the PaaS Services which are mostly likely to complement a SaaS environment fit into the categories above. Read the complete article here.
