Delivering SOA Governance with EAMS and Oracle Enterprise Repository by Link Consulting Team

In the last 12 years Link Consulting has been making its presence in specific areas such as Governance and Architecture, both in terms of practices and methodologies, products, know-how and technological expertise. The Enterprise Architecture Management System – Oracle Enterprise Edition (EAMS – OER Edition) is the result of this experience and combines the architecture management solution with OER in order to deliver a product specialized for SOA Governance that gathers the better of two worlds in solution that enables SOA Governance projects, initiatives and programs.

Enterprise Architecture Management System

Enterprise Architecture Management System (EAMS), is an automation based solution that enables the efficient management of Enterprise Architectures. The solution uses configured enterprise repositories and takes advantages of its features to provide automation capabilities to the users. EAMS provides capabilities to create/customize/analyze repository data, architectural blueprints, reports and analytic charts.

Oracle Enterprise Repository

Oracle Enterprise Repository (OER) is one of the major and central elements of the Oracle SOA Governance solution. Oracle Enterprise Repository provides the tools to manage and govern the metadata for any type of software asset, from business processes and services to patterns, frameworks, applications, components, and models. OER maps the relationships and inter-dependencies that connect those assets to improve impact analysis, promote and optimize their reuse, and measure their impact on the bottom line. It provides the visibility, feedback, controls, and analytics to keep your SOA on track to deliver business value. The intense focus on automation helps to overcome barriers to SOA adoption and streamline governance throughout the lifecycle.

Core capabilities of the OER include:

  • Asset Management

  • Asset Lifecycle Management

  • Usage Tracking

  • Service Discovery

  • Version Management

  • Dependency Analysis

  • Portfolio Management

EAMS – OER Edition

The solution takes the advantages and features from both products and combines them in a symbiotic tool that enhances the quality of SOA Governance Initiatives and Programs.

EAMS is able to produce a vast number of outputs by combining its analytical engine, SOA-specific configurations and the assets in OER and other related tools, catalogs and repositories. The configurations encompass not only the extendable parametrization of the metadata but also fully configurable blueprints, PowerPoint reports, charts and queries.

The SOA blueprints

The solution comes with a set of predefined architectural representations that help the organization better perceive their SOA landscape. More blueprints can be easily created in order to accommodate the organizations needs in terms of detail, audience and metadata.

Service Catalog Blueprint

Charts & Dashboards

The solution encompasses a set of predefined charts and dashboards that promote a more agile way to control and explore the assets.

SOA Dashboard

Time Based Visualization

All representations are time bound, and with EAMS – OER you can truly govern SOA with a complete view of the Past, Present and Future; The solution delivers Gap Analysis, a project oriented approach while taking into consideration the As-Was, As-Is an To-Be.

Time based visualization

Time based visualization differentiating factors:

  • Extensive automation and maintenance of architectural representations

  • Organization wide solution.

  • Easy access and navigation to and between all architectural artifacts and representations.

  • Flexible meta-model, customization and extensibility capabilities.

  • Lifecycle management and enforcement of the time dimension over all the repository content.

  • Profile based customization.

  • Comprehensive visibility

  • Architectural alignment

  • Friendly and striking user interfaces

SOA Community Newsletter August 2012

Dear SOA partner community member

Have you submitted your feedback on SOA Partner Community Survey 2012? This is the last chance to participate in the survey. We recommend you to complete the survey and help us to improve our SOA Community.

Thanks to all attendees and trainers for their participation in the excellent Fusion Middleware Summer Camps held in Lisbon and Munich. I would also like to thank you for the great feedback and the nice reports provided by AMIS Technology Blog & Middleware by Link Consulting.

Most of our courses have been overbooked, if you did not get a chance or missed it, we offer a wide range of online training and the course material. Key take-away from the advanced BPM course is to become an expert in ADF. Here is the course from Grant Ronald Learn Advanced ADF online available.

The Link Consulting Team became experts in SOA Governance with EAMS and Oracle Enterprise Repository! We always encourage our community members to share their best practices and are very keen to publish it. Please let us know if you want to share your best practices through this medium.

We encourage you to make use of the Specialization benefits – this month we are giving an opportunity to Promote Your SOA & BPM Events.

Lost in Translation – Common Mistakes Interpreting Patterns – Mark Simpson, Griffiths-Waite @ SOA, Cloud & Service Technology Symposium 2012

Speaker: Mark Simpson, Griffiths-Waite

Mark has been specialising in Oracle technology for 13 years, the last 10 of these with Griffiths Waite. Mark leads our SOA technology practice (covering SOA, Business Process Management and Enterprise Architecture).

He is a much sought after presenter on the Oracle and SOA conference circuits, and a respected authority on these technologies. Mark has advised a host of UK leading organisations on the deployment of BPM / SOA solutions. Working closely with Oracle US Product Development Mark has contributed to Oracle’s SOA Methodology and Oracle’s SOA Maturity Model.

Lost in Translation – Common Mistakes Interpreting Patterns

Learn how small misinterpretations of high-level design patterns can have large and costly project ramifications.

Good SOA design benefits from the use of a reference architecture and standardised design patterns. However both of these concepts give an abstracted view of the intended solution, which needs to be interpreted to become realised. A reference implementation is important to demonstrate how key design guidelines can be implemented in the toolset of choice, but the main success factor is how these are used through the build and post live phases of the project.

This session will introduce practical design patterns with supporting implementation examples that, if used correctly, will give long term benefit. We will highlight implementations where misinterpretations or misalignment from pattern aims have led to issues post implementation. The session will add depth to the pattern discussions you are already having enabling confidence in proceeding to the next level of realisation whilst considering how they may be implemented within your solution and chosen toolset.

Speaker: Ricardo Puttini, University of Brasili

Prof. Ricardo Puttini holds a PhD in Communication Networks (2004) from the University of Brasília, where he teaches at the Electrical Engineering Department since 1998. During his PhD, he spent three semesters in L′Ecole Supérieure d′Életricité (Supelec, Rennes – France), when he started researching on distributed systems architecture and security, which became his main interest area. Prof. Puttini has 15 years of field experience as senior IT consultant at major government organizations in Brazil. He has taught several undergraduate and graduate level courses in service orientation, service oriented architecture and cloud computing. Prof. Puttini was the general chair of 4th International SOA + Cloud Symposium, 2011, Brasilia – Brazil. He is the co-author of the book "Cloud Computing: Concepts and technologies".

SOA Adoption in the Brazilian Ministry of Health – Case Study

In this case study we present the challenges and achievements of a major SOA adoption initiative carried out for the Brazilian Ministry of Health. Brazil has a universal healthcare system (SUS), with the federal States and Municipalities. The Ministry of Health IT Enterprise (DATASUS) is responsible for establishing nation-wide databases and information systems, and developing and maintaining 300+ information systems with national scope and usage. This SOA initiative started in 2010 as a strategic approach to redesigning the software architecture of 15 structured information systems that exist in silo-based architectures, while promoting systems interoperability together with agility and cost reduction. The business context for the SOA program was defined by via the development of the Brazilian Electronic Health Record department. The challenges encountered with this project included: the federated organization of the Brazilian health care system (resulting in a great number of issues related to governance); low maturity of SOA platforms during this period; heterogeneous platforms and technologies used in legacy systems; multiple business area with conflicting requirements and information security.

The main benefits achieved by this SOA adoption include:

  • definition of a reference architecture
  • definition of a reference methodology
  • definition of a maturity model and roadmap
  • deployment of a corporate service inventory (currently, with 20+ services)
  • consolidation of the National Registry of Universal Healthcare System (+180M individuals subscribed) using SOA-based architecture
  • consolidation of the National Registry of Healthcare Establishments using SOA-based architecture
Annual cost reduction estimates resulting from this successful SOA adoption are expected to exceed 30% in 2012.

Business Driven Development (BDD) Demo Now Available!

For access to the Oracle demo systems please visit OPN and talk to your Partner Expert

DSS is pleased to announce the availability of the demo “Business Driven Development“. This innovative demonstration uses a case-study approach to show business users how they can easily streamline their Business Processes – delivering greater efficiency, agility, visibility and collaboration with Oracle BPM and WebCenter.

The BDD demonstration uses a case study-based approach to highlight a business problem at a fictional company, Avitek Corporation, and uses Oracle BPM and Oracle WebCenter to solve the business problem. This holistic approach has specifically been used to appeal to a non-technical business analyst user. This demo is NOT focused on product features, but aims to guide users through a complete BPM lifecycle.

The scenario is based on improving a simple order process (scenario details are in the demo script). Avitek Corporation is sufferinng from a manual email-driven ordering process. Sales reps don’t know where the customer orders are stuck (no visibility) and finance users are unable to manually approve every order (no automation). There are several areas where this process can be improved with Business Process Management technology. This demo shows how improving following areas will ignificantly help resolve the business problems Avitek Corporation is facing. Areas for improvement include:

  • Utilizing BPM for process management, rather than an unregulated, email-based process.
  • Utilizing automated services, rather than requiring a human to key into a system. For example, Finance checking the customer’s credit rating is something that could be automated.
  • Centralizing business rules that can be integrated into a business process, rather than requiring a human to process them. For example, Finance must determine when orders can be automatically approved.
  • Provide insight and visibility into the process. For example, Sales Rep needs to know the status of their customer’s orders.

The BDD Demo uses the following products.

  • Oracle BPM Suite 11g PS4FP
  • Oracle WebCenter 11g PS4FP (for Process Spaces)
  • Oracle Business Activity Monitoring 11g
  • Oracle Database 11g

Oracle Fusion Applications Design Patterns Now Available For Developers by Ultan O’Broin

The Oracle Fusion Applications user experience design patterns are published! These new, reusable usability solutions and best-practices, which will join the Oracle dashboard patterns and guidelines that are already available online, are used by Oracle to artfully bring to life a new standard in the user experience, or UX, of enterprise applications. Now, the Oracle applications development community can benefit from the science behind the Oracle Fusion Applications user experience, too.

These Oracle Fusion Applications UX Design Patterns, or blueprints, enable Oracle applications developers and system implementers everywhere to leverage professional usability insight when:

  • tailoring an Oracle Fusion application,
  • creating coexistence solutions that existing users will be delighted with, thus enabling graceful user transitions to Oracle Fusion Applications down the road, or
  • designing exciting, new, highly usable applications in the cloud or on-premise.

Based on the Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF) components, the Oracle Fusion Applications patterns and guidelines are proven with real users and in the Applications UX usability labs, so you can get right to work coding productivity-enhancing designs that provide an advantage for your entire business.

What’s the best way to get started? We’ve made that easy, too. The Design Filter Tool (DeFT) selects the best pattern for your user type and task. Simply adapt your selection for your own task flow and content, and you’re on your way to a really great applications user experience.

More Oracle applications design patterns and training are coming your way in the future. To provide feedback on the sets that are currently available, let me know in the comments!

Cloud-based Enterprise Architecture

We know service-oriented architectures can deliver huge agility benefits for developing new functionality through repeated service reuse. However, if our shared services become highly used, they may be subjected to massively increased loads from runtime events that we, as service owners, cannot predict. With the significant return on investment gained with the deployment of public and private clouds, virtualization technology is now making it possible to combine SOA infrastructures with monitoring and APM tools to elastically scale out service deployments in response to real-time load increases.

This session will take a technical deep dive into a service-oriented architecture engineered specifically for elasticity. The following questions will be explored:

  • How can I monitor the load on my Services?
  • How can I fire up additional compute capacity as a service becomes loaded?
  • How do I architect my SOA deployment to utilise the power and flexibility of a private or public cloud?
  • How do I deploy UDDI to ensure clients can fully utilise new capacity?
  • How can I see what is happening on my ESB infrastructure?
This talk is aimed at for architects and developers who have moved beyond "playing" with SOA in the cloud, and are looking to deploy SOA into a cloud-based production environment.
