Making the Business Case for BPM/SOA by Avio

Business Process Management (BPM) and Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) provide enterprise-level IT environments the benefits of flexibility, versatility, and a relative ease-of-use that makes BPM attractive to business managers and SOA to IT executives.
BPM has become the go-to solution for optimizing a wide range of business processes and improving an organization’s efficiency and agility. BPM’s popularity is due in large part to the way it can seamlessly integrate a variety of human, document, and system-based processes to streamline and simplify the enterprise ecosystem and make businesses more agile, responsive, and competitive. But what makes it especially attractive is the capability it provides non-technical employees to alter software processes and change rules without having to delve into coding.
SOA , on the other hand, provides organizational flexibility much like BPM, but on a fundamental infrastructure level. Simply put, it lowers software development and management costs by providing the ability to create reusable software modules. SOA, by its very nature, enables simple services to be combined to make more complex ones with increased functionality, while speeding development and time-to-implementation.
Given their similarities, it stands to reason that if BPM and SOA are valuable on their own, they’re even more valuable together. However, it can be a hard sell because the two methodologies seem, on the surface, to be somewhat redundant and integration (along with the cost) unnecessary.

Here are some ideas for making a solid business case for BPM/SOA:

  • Implementing a BPM/SOA solution balances the need to fulfill strategic business goals with the tactical reality of working within the constraints of limited IT resources. BPM/SOA provides one solution for both challenges.
  • Process optimization benefits the entire enterprise. An integrated BPM/SOA IT environment can increase overall productivity, IT responsiveness, and the effective utilization of technological and human resources.
  • Integrated BPM/SOA increases IT agility, making the enterprise more responsive to rapid market changes and technological evolution. Read the complete article here.

Adaptive Case Management Modeling with CMMN by Jessica Ray

A new version of Oracle BPM Suite 11.1.1.7 with Adaptive Case Management (ACM) is now available, so what will that mean for requirements gathering? BPM project requirements can be documented using Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN 2.0). For ACM, there is a new notation in the works. It is called Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN). For now, this notation isn’t included as a modeling tool in the new version of Oracle BPM Suite 11.1.1.7 with ACM, but it is possible that a modeling tool could be included in a future release.

What is CMMN? CMMN is a standard intended to capture the common elements that Case Management Products use, the same way that BPMN is a standard for BPM products (such as Oracle BPM). CMMN is created by the Object Management Group (OMG) and is still in the beta version. In April 2014, OMG released the second beta version the CMMN 1.0, and the most recent version is available here.

CMMN captures some of the elements that are commonly used when talking about ACM such as Cases, Milestones, and Tasks. It also introduces some elements that you may not automatically hear when talking about ACM such as Stages, Events, and Decorators. Here is a quick summary at a few (but not all) of the elements of CMMN taken from the CMMN spec.

Why Healthcare Today Needs BPM and SOA by Avio

Within the past couple years, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has led to significant changes in the healthcare industry. A highly-complex supply chain between patients, providers, buyers and insurance companies has led to a lack of overall collaboration when it comes to processes.

The first open enrollment deadline for products on the Health Insurance Exchange has passed. So what now? Let’s take a brief look at how things have changed and what organizations can do to stay in (and ahead of) the game.

New requirements, new processes
Organizations that have not adapted processes to meet new regulatory requirements will fall further behind. New regulatory requirements effectively make some legacy applications obsolete, require batch process to move to real-time, and more. Business Process Management (BPM) can help organizations bring data processes in line while helping IT redesign processes rather than change code or replace existing applications. BPM fills in application gaps and links critical information systems for a more visible, efficient and auditable organization.

Social and mobile solutions
BPM technology also facilitates social and mobile solutions that can help meet new needs. Patients are dependent on a network of doctors, pharmacists, families and others. Social solutions can connect members of the patient’s community in ways never seen before – enabling real-time, relevant communication. Likewise, mobile technology supports social solutions, and BPM is the most efficient way to make processes simple and role-based. It unties medical professionals from their offices by enabling them to access timely information and alerts anywhere.

Why SOA is also needed
Integrating BPM with Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) also plays a critical role in the development of healthcare solutions that work. SOA can create a single end-to-end process, integrate applications and move them into a common workflow. While SOA enables the reutilization of existing IT infrastructure, BPM supports the process optimization, monitoring and social aspects. SOA and BPM applications support business analysts as they model, create and monitor processes – providing real-time insight and a unified workflow of process activities.
