SOA Suite 11g ps6 – Download your log files directly from the Enterprise Manager by Dirk Janssen

PlaatjeLogFiles With the latest Oracle SOA Suite (PS6) the Enterprise Manager has been updated. The first thing that will be noticed is that the look and feel has been changed. However that is not the only difference. While looking for log messages (I was not allowed to log into the server directly) I stumbled upon a new feature. It is now possible to access and download the complete server log files from your browser using the EM console. You no longer have to jump through hoops to access and share the log files. Service Oriented Architecture is a natural step in the evolution of Information Technology; we started out with big systems in universities and banks, and moved to desktop computers in the workplace and at home. We are now moving to solutions in the cloud, offering services to consumers and businesses alike, adding mobile computing to the mix. So what is a service? A service is something that has value. Service orientation is not a difficult concept to grasp, everyone knows services and uses them daily; think of a hotel that offers a shuttle service to the nearest airport. Or the hairdresser that cuts your hair. This presentation introduces SOA, using a practical and simple approach. Mobile Order Management for EBS GSE Demo using middleware technology

Global Sales Engineering (GSE, formerly DSS) is happy to announce the availability of “Mobile Order Management for EBS”.

The demo use case is a dashboard for a sporting goods manufacturing company that provides its mobile sales force with real time access to the backend EBS data as well as key business KPIs (fulfillment accuracy, backorders, order status).

Transactional support (EBS order entry) from the device is also supported, depending on the user authorization level. In addition, integration with native location services (GPS) provides the capability to launch maps to automatically locate customers who are nearby.

Overcoming the challenges to developing user interfaces in a service oriented architecture.

Abstract: The interaction between user-interfaces and services in an Service Oriented Architecture is an often-neglected topic. This article focuses on the particular challenges that need to be overcome when creating user-interfaces while entire process chains have to be called and interacted with. After outlining some general architectural considerations, the authors describe a practical application of Thomas Erl’s UI Mediator pattern that will be accompanied by their own technical experience.

Introduction

In the simplest scenario, a user’s interaction with a business process consists of initiating the process and awaiting the result. However, processes very rarely run completely automatically, meaning human intervention in a process cycle is an important requirement. The WS-HumanTask specification can fulfill this requirement in the SOA environment. A standardized API that is defined for a workflow service can be used to fill a mailbox with tasks. If the process automation language BPEL is used, the BPEL4People specification defines how this mailbox functionality can be used directly in the process cycle by means of the WS-Human Task. Of course, this is possible from BPMN, too.

For example, if manual approval or the input of additional data is needed during a process cycle, the process can determine the correct actor and deposit the task in their mailbox via the task service. The HumanTask service provides a Web service API for this functionality. The users receive the entries in their mailbox and process the pending tasks sequentially, while the process resumes its work in the background.

Human Interaction & Mailboxes

This solution concept is flawless from a technical viewpoint, but its handling is unfamiliar to many users. Workflows can even be perceived as disruptive for short processes that lack role changes, since conventional data-driven application systems can provide immediate responses without detouring to a mailbox. Process control is embedded in the interface control.

Users are their own process masters when such conventional applications are used, whereas a mailbox-supported solution subjects the users to the restrictions of a prescribed process.

Anyone designing classic BPMN or BPEL processes with mailbox interaction understands that users will be faced with a long list of tasks in their mailbox, which often require mechanical and repetitive interactions. Nowadays, many technical departments are aware of this issue, and provide assistance to the users whose daily processes need their requirements recorded.

With the advent of SOA and loose coupling, work processes are further automated and process control is gradually shifted to the back-end. Excessively close coupling of processes and interfaces should be avoided, since processes can also be subject to frequent adaptations due to flexibility. Decoupling via the mailbox is generally the most effective solution.

Recap of the "Real-World Cloud Integration Simplified with Oracle SOA Suite" presentation at Oracle OpenWorld 2013

I attended this presentation at Oracle OpenWorld 2013 titled "Real-World Cloud Integration Simplified with Oracle SOA Suite" by:

Raghu Kadirvelu (Bristlecone, Inc.)
Vikas Anand (Senior Director, Product Management, Oracle)
Rajesh Raheja (Senior Director, Development, Oracle)

Raghu provided a live demo of multiple integrations between E-Business Suite (which was sitting on premise in their data center) and SalesForce.com (which resided on the cloud). The SOA Suite integrations were built using the new 11g SalesForce adapter, and demonstrated the bi-directional movement of data to satisfy two functional use cases.

This was by far one of the best SOA presentations I attended at OpenWorld this year, and let me explain why.
At the surface, this appears to be a simple presentation on yet another JCA adapter. But both Vikas (@VikasAatOracle) and Rajesh (@RahejaRajesh) are masters in their domain, and you have to listen closely to them to really understand that these guys are visionaries in their respective fields.
Here are some of the points I appreciated:

The live demo showcased multiple asynchronous integrations between E-Business Suite and SalesForce, seeing first hand how the end result works. The techies in the crowd got it.
A walkthrough in JDeveloper of the new 11g SalesForce "cloud" adapter was provided, with mention to some of the various (unique) options specific to the adapter and how Oracle addressed SalesForce API design considerations.
A brief mention of cloud-to-cloud integrations was made, but Vikas stated that the trend they’ve been seeing was more onpremise-to-cloud scenarios, and that typically any organization would want to host their master data internally while still taking advantage of cursory or supplementary cloud services.
