PaaS4SaaS UX Enablement with Certus Solutions: Valid Business Proposition by Ultan O’Broin

clip_image002Oracle’s Platform as a Service (PaaS) is a huge opportunity for Oracle partners. Using PaaS4SaaS  for extending the Oracle Applications Cloud and building simplified UI solutions are powerful differentiators combined. Add in user experience (UX), and it’s a competitive must-have move for business. The Oracle Applications User Experience (OAUX) communications and outreach team has been on the road enabling partners to make this competitive potential real.

Our first PaaS4SaaS enablement in 2015 was a three-day, hands-on design and development event with Certus Solutions, which was held at the Oracle London City office in the UK.

An awesome range of UX and technology skills from OAUX and partners was brought to bear on realizing a Cloud solution with attendees self-organizing and working seamlessly together in small agile teams.

All the stakeholders. Certus Solutions, eProseed and OAUX developers and designers collaborate. (L-R) Caroline Moloney (Certus Solutions), Lancy Silveira (OAUX), Mascha van Oosterhout (eProseed), and Julian Orr (OAUX). In the background are Debra Lilley (Certus Solutions) and Amit Kumar Bhowmick (OAUX).

Certus Solutions has partnered with eProseed to accelerate its PaaS offerings for extending the Oracle HCM Cloud and Oracle ERP Cloud, and participants from both companies were at the event*. Facilitated by the OAUX design and development chops, this powerhouse of a team wireframed a great business solution for the Oracle Applications Cloud, built it using the simplified UI RDK, and deployed the result using the Oracle Java Cloud Service SaaS-Extension (JCS-SX) PaaS offering. ACE Director on Clearing the ConFusion – Oracle Cloud Applications by Debra Lilley

clip_image001As I typed that title I cringed. I have been an advocate for Oracle’s development of Next Generation Applications from the day they announced Fusion, and I hated the term quickly coined by pessimists of ‘Fusion – Confusion’. But now as Oracle drops the name Fusion, for its applications, I feel there really is some confusion, so I am going to use this post to clarify to this community.

Why am I writing this post for this blog? Well the problem is Oracle knows it has renamed the products, but their customers don’t. If you are attending COLLABORATE in April the stream is called Fusion Applications, and if it wasn’t the number of attendees would be very small, but more and more you need to recognise the Cloud brand. The components of Cloud that Oracle developed in their technology (okay, Fusion applications), are 100% written on Oracle Fusion Middleware, that hasn’t gone anywhere and continues to be developed, and it is the use of these Oracle Fusion Middleware technologies that Oracle AppAdvantage is all about – extending the capabilities of "Fusion" Applications with Oracle Fusion Middleware. My starting position and reason I became involved with this AppAdvantage initiative is that there is no better shop window for what Oracle Fusion Middleware can do than the applications that Oracle has developed itself.

I did try an explanation on my own blog after Oracle Open World but this time I will be more succinct.

FACT : All Fusion Applications are now Cloud Applications.

Each pillar is now renamed Oracle …. Cloud , so Fusion Financials is now part of Oracle ERP Cloud, within each pillar there are the separate offerings which are normally desecrate process areas and with discrete pricing.

FACT : Not all  Cloud Applications started Life as Fusion Applications.

As part of their Cloud journey, Oracle has acquired some native cloud-delivered applications, such as Taleo and RightNow. The plan, being executed is that these products are being unified, i.e. integrated with other offerings, where possible being delivered on the same technology stack and being given the same User Experience as Oracle’s home grown offerings.

RightNow has for some time been known as Oracle Service Cloud  and the recruiting module from Taleo as Oracle Recruiting Cloud

FACT: Cloud Applications don’t have to be SaaS

Software as a Service is the deployment of an application in a cloud environment. Oracle, or a third party in some cases, hosts the application and look after not only the infrastructure but the patching and security, and in turn you pay a subscription to use charge.

Most of these same applications could be deployed on-premise with you being responsible for all the above and with the more traditional upfront licence costs.

Oracle have called the products Cloud because they are available and are being deployed as such more and more that way.

FACT : Oracle are trying to make it easy for you to find this all in one place.

This is a great place to start: https://cloud.oracle.com/home. The Applications tab goes through the offerings and you can find the PaaS offerings to extend and strengthen your SaaS. Read the article here.

The Internet of Things Will Be Huge, Is Your IT Infrastructure Ready to Support It? by Harish Venkat

clip_image002IDC predicts that the worldwide IoT market will grow from $1.3 trillion in 2013 to $3.04 trillion in 2020 (1). IDC also states that within three years, 50% of IT networks will transition from having excess capacity to handle the additional IoT devices to being network constrained. (2)
As further evidence, analyst firm 451 Research reported an increase in M&A spending in 2014 that pushed ‘Internet of Things’-related deal-making past the $14bn mark, a fortyfold increase in acquirer spending compared to 2013. (3)
This rate of growth cannot be ignored. IoT is inevitable and will create tremendous opportunity for a new wave of services built around connected devices. It will also pose challenges to IT and infrastructure leaders for the following reasons:

  • The volume of data that will come off devices will be enormous and capable of completely overwhelming network infrastructures.
  • IT infrastructures will need to support these vast amounts of data.
  • Solutions that aren’t fully integrated will fail to deliver needed data and analytic capabilities. All devices will need to be integrated with all other devices, so seamless integration of applications and technologies will be critical.
  • Realizing business value from IoT will be dependent upon scalable and flexible infrastructures that can integrate and secure data received from various components and devices.

How can you prepare? A good first step is to modernize IT infrastructures and upgrade legacy architectures. As is the case with other technology trends like mobile, big data, and social, IT needs to be agile and strongly aligned with the business. This means anticipating and responding to business needs quickly, providing real-time information that informs decision-making, and being scalable to support planned and unplanned growth. Maven Repository – Index now available – more to come by Mark Nelson

clip_image002I am happy to announce that we now have an index available for the Oracle Maven Repository.  This is a standard Maven index, built with the Maven Core Indexer code (donated by Sonatype to Maven – thanks!) and is available at https://maven.oracle.com/.index/nexus-maven-repository-index.properties and https://maven.oracle.com/.index/nexus-maven-repository-index.gz.

The easiest way to view it is to use an IDE like NetBeans, as shown below:

We are actively working with Maven Repository Manager and IDE teams to make this work for you across a variety of common tools you may use. Read the complete article here.
