What does Cloud Computing mean for your service business? The answer is more services! Learn in a demo how you can re-use a SOA integration platform to integrate SaaS solutions. Also the latest Oracle SalesForce, Microsoft and NetSuite announcements are all about middleware!

If you missed the SOA Blackbelt training, thanks to Lonnekes blog posts for the excellent summery about the training. Make sure you do NOT miss the OFM Summer Camps III. Specially we recommend to register for the B2B & Adapters training!

As part of the Industrial SOA series we published two new articles SOA Maturity Alongside Contract Standardization & Enterprise Service Bus. Two new books have been published by the community Advanced OSB in 21 days and Getting Started with Oracle Event Processing 11g (see our publications wiki!). Thanks to Michel Schildmeijer who published an article series about Oracle Service Bus 11g. API Management is one of the hottest topics within SOA, our product management team just published a new datasheets API Management Datasheet & Enterprise Repository for API Management.

Within BPM unstructured processes used to be a big challenge, due to the potential high number of process flows. Adaptive case management can address this to create ad-hoc processes without to model each variety. With PS6 the ACM backend functionality is available, want to try it, check out the Case Management Samples Released. Read also the ACM Articles by Ajay Khanna & The Oracle Case Management API.

What to position BPM in certain industries – increasing Efficiency and Responsiveness BPM in the Public Sector & BPM in Financial Services.

Cloud Computing Concepts, Technology & Architecture

Cloud Computing: Concepts, Technology & ArchitectureDuring my holiday I read a book on “Cloud Computing: Concepts, Technology & Architecture”. I found this book as an excellent resource for IT professionals and managers who want to learn and understand cloud computing, and who need to select or build cloud systems and solutions. It lays the foundation for cloud concepts, models, technologies and mechanisms. As the book is vendor-neutral, it will remain valid for many years. I will recommend this book to Oracle customers, partners and users for their journey towards cloud computing. This book has the potential to become the basis for a cloud computing manifesto, comparable to what was accomplished with the SOA manifesto – Jürgen Kress.

Clouds are distributed technology platforms that leverage sophisticated technology innovations to provide highly scalable and resilient environments that can be remotely utilized by organizations in a multitude of powerful ways. To successfully build upon, integrate with, or even create a cloud environment requires an understanding of its common inner mechanics, architectural layers, and models, as well as an understanding of the business and economic factors that result from the adoption and real-world usage of cloud-based services.

In Cloud Computing: Concepts, Technology & Architecture, Thomas Erl, one of the world’s top-selling IT authors, teams up with cloud computing experts and researchers to break down proven and mature cloud computing technologies and practices into a series of well-defined concepts, models, technology mechanisms, and technology architectures, all from an industry-centric and vendor-neutral point of view. In doing so, the book establishes concrete, academic coverage with a focus on structure, clarity, and well-defined building blocks for mainstream cloud computing platforms and solutions.

Subsequent to technology-centric coverage, the book proceeds to establish business-centric models and metrics that allow for the financial assessment of cloud-based IT resources, and their comparison to those hosted on traditional IT enterprise premises. Also provided are templates and formulas for calculating SLA-related quality-of-service values and numerous explorations of the SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS delivery models.

With over 260 figures, 29 architectural models, and 20 mechanisms, this indispensable guide provides a comprehensive education of cloud computing essentials that will never leave your side.

The book is available at Service Tech Books or at Amazon. Looking for additional SOA books or if you have published a book, please feel free to add it to our publications wiki!

A Pragmatic Approach to Cloud Adoption
For enterprises that seek to transform their IT capabilities and avoid disruption in the process, a structured, pragmatic approach to Cloud computing is required. You’ll find one in this practitioner guide, part of the IT Strategies from Oracle library. Read it.

Cloud Foundation
This reference architecture document from the IT Strategies from Oracle library provides architectural principles, standards, concepts, and a conceptual view for Cloud architecture. Read it.

Cloud Infrastructure

“Cloud Integration in Minutes” – True or False? By Bruce Tierney

The short answer is “yes”. Connecting on-premise and cloud applications “in minutes” is true…provided you only consider the connectivity subset of integration and have a small number of cloud integration touch points.

At the recent Gartner AADI conference, 230 attendees filled up the Oracle session to get a more comprehensive answer to this question. During the session, titled “Simplifying Integration – The Cloud & Mobile Pre-requisite”, Oracle’s Tim Hall described cloud connectivity and then, equally importantly, the other essential and sometimes overlooked aspects of integration required to ensure a long term application and service integration strategy. To understand the challenges and opportunities faced by cloud integration, the session started off with a slide that describes how connectivity can quickly transition from simplicity to complexity as the number of applications and service vendor instances grows:Reasons for Cloud Integration Complexity
Increased complexity puts increased demand on the integration platform
As companies expand from on-premise applications into a hybrid on-premise/cloud infrastructure with support for mobile, cloud, and social, there is a new sense of urgency to implement a unified and comprehensive service integration platform. Without getting this unified platform in place, companies face increased complexity and cost managing a growing patchwork of niche integration toolsets as well as the disparate standards mandated by each SaaS vendor as shown in the image below: Read the full article here.

SOA Community Newsletter February 2013

Dear SOA partner community member

In this newsletter edition we highlighted many new online demos for SOA, BPM and OEP. Being a partner, you can use the same demo systems that Oracle pre-sales consultants use every day for customers. Out of the box demos including a flow & script have been updated. Demos are key in the sales process! To access the DSS demo systems please visit OPN and feel free to talk to your Partner Expert!

With the rise of big and fast data SOA and pattern matching can play a key role, make sure you attend our webcast and get the latest whitepaper. To design SOA architectures, OASIS published a SOA reference architecture and EAIESB a SOA BPEL 2.0 Poster. If you work on SOA project make sure you follow the C2B2 SOA Tuning webcast series and I recommend you to try the SOA Testing utilities.

In the BPM section we published new papers such as Transforming Customer Experience,Cooking Up Successful BPMand BPM in Utilities. In addition to this the BPM DSS Demos to extend Siebel are available. Mark Nelson published a blog post about Collecting diagnostic information for BPM and Jan van Zoggel about Integration of Oracle BPM and Oracle UCM/WCC. Please read these publications and make yourself updated from these shared knowledge.

I will be looking forward to see you all in Portugal for the Fusion Middleware Partner Community Forum 2013.

Cloud Integration White Paper – Now Available

Accidental SOA Cloud ArchitectureInterested in expanding your existing application infrastructure to integrate with cloud applications? Download the new Oracle White Paper “Cloud Integration – A Comprehensive Solution” to learn not just about connectivity but the other key aspects of successful cloud integration.
The paper includes three technical examples of cloud integration with Oracle Fusion Applications, Saleforce, and Workday and follows with the importance of taking a comprehensive approach to also include service aggregation, service virtualization, cloud security considerations and the benefit of maintaining a unified approach to monitoring and management despite an increasingly distributed hybrid infrastructure.

To keep the integration architecture from being defined “accidentally” as new business units subscribe to additional cloud vendors outside the participation of IT, a discussion on the “Accidental SOA Cloud Architecture” is included:Read the article here.

At our SOA Community Workspace (SOA Community membership required) we uploaded the whitepaper cloud-integration-wp.pdf and presentation
