Tracking progress of your BPEL process using sensors by Lonneke Dikmans

Often when you start using Oracle SOA Suite11g and BPEL you need a mechanism to help the end users keep track of the progress of the overall process instances. The EM shows this to administrators, but this is not suitable for end users.

What about the worklist application?
The SOA Suite offers the worklist application to handle tasks and to view progress using views and reports. It shows human tasks, crossing multiple process definitions. It does not show invocation of services or specific data changes in the process. The figure below shows three instances of one specific process definition. In this example relevant milestones are reached when the process starts, the first automated step is executed, the second human task is executed and when the process ends. In the worklist application you would be able to see what human tasks are open or executed by which user. With the worklist application you can’t keep track of the first, second and last milestone, only of the third one because that is the only one associated with a human task. SOA Governance FAQ by Luis Weir

After more than decade implementing SOA, I’ve come to the conclusion that one of the reasons that prevent organisations from realising the benefits of SOA is the lack of some sort of governance in their SOA implementations. I have also come to the sad conclusion that even though this is well known fact, many (end customers and SIs alike) still lack understanding of what SOA Governance is and why is it needed. Having said that, I created this post not only for my own reference, but also share this knowledge for those wishing to improve their understanding on this amazing topic.

Hopefully this FAQ provides some concise answers to many of these questions.

What is SOA Governance?

R. In simplistic terms, SOA Governance is the alignment of processes, people and tools needed to ensure that a SOA implementation is successful. SOA Governance primary objective is to maximise the benefits that SOA can bring to the business and IT. One thing to bear in mind is that SOA Governance does not exist on its own; it is in fact an extension of IT governance and EA governance. Read the complete article here.

MDM and SOA: Be Warned! part of Industrial SOA series

Introduction "You will waste your investment in SOA unless you have enterprise information that SOA can exploit." – Gartner

This quote from Gartner, Inc. describes the relationship between service-oriented architecture (SOA) and master data management (MDM) very vividly. An essential principle behind SOA is the reuse of components and the flexibility of using these components to support new functionalities or processes. MDM provides universal components (or services) for consistent data maintenance and distribution. Here the architecture concepts and principles of SOA run into MDM.

This article begins by giving a brief motive for using MDM and a conceptualization. It will then go on to present typical variants for possible MDM architecture concepts, and illustrate the interplay of MDM and SOA with reference to the architecture pattern.

Motive
Increasing pressure from competition means that business models and underlying business processes have to be adapted in ever shorter cycles. At the same time, globalization and the digital networking of companies are making interaction with external business partners even more complex. Securely exchanging high-quality data is crucial for increasing efficiency in processes. This is where the central issue, the quality of information, and therefore its security in transactions, evaluations, and reports, all stem from. Once a company is no longer in a position to provide a consistent and consolidated view of its central business objects, implementing a company-wide policy for master data management becomes a good idea.

Unfortunately, in many companies today it is common for IT systems to be unable to keep up with fast changes in organization, business, and even technology. As a result, on the companies’ side, a vast, ever-growing web of IT systems with known integration problems comes into being. This heterogeneity accounts for a variety of challenges when using master data that include differences in:

  • imgdata structures and formats in master data
  • specifications and understanding of the master data values in the participating organizational units
  • validations and plausibilities (data quality)
  • processes and responsibilities concerning data sovereignty (data governance)
  • business processes with partially conflicting functionalities in the application systems
  • organizational units that have different systems for master data maintenance
