The employee experience of your organization is more transparent than ever. If Public Sector agencies are expected to compete with Commercial employers, they have to make strong first impressions on their new-hires. By improving the employee’s initial experience, your Human Resources department can have an immediate influence on employee productivity and retention.

What do employees care about?

I wrote a blog post back in April 2016 called “Recruit Millennials with Innovative Oracle Cloud Projects” highlighting the fact that the younger generations of the American workforce are attracted to innovative projects that give them the chance to get visibility for their achievements. In a 2015 NY Times article, Swarthmore Professor Barry Schwartz writes:

“But most important, we need to emphasize the ways in which an employee’s work makes other people’s lives at least a little bit better (and, of course, to make sure that it actually does make people’s lives a little bit better).”

More so than commercial industries, the social impact of a Government job has to be evident and visible in the outcomes of every day responsibility. The perennial value of our work is that it supposed to be a dedication to the citizen. The more often your employees are reminded of the imperishable effects they are having on your organization’s beneficiaries, the more motivated they will be to succeed.

There is an important accompaniment to “visibility”, which is of course recognition and reward. Tony Scwartz – Chief Executive of The Energy Project – worked with The Harvard Business Review to conduct a study of +20,000 employees across the globe to inspect which components contribute to a retentive workplace (among other things: Read the complete article here.

AWARD-WINNING DESIGN: OAUX Senior Director George Hackman was in New York in early November on behalf of the OAUX team to accept an award from Fast Company. Asteroid Explorers, a tool developed for NASA’s Minor Planet Center, received an honorable mention in the Social Good category in Fast Company’s 2016 Innovation by Design Awards.

Fast Company said in its announcement about the award: “This year’s submissions were as strong as any we’ve ever seen, with more than 1,700 entries from 41 different countries. In the eyes of our esteemed judges, your work was among the best of the best.” This year’s Innovation by Design winners are featured online. NASA also published a press release in September when the Asteroid Explorer added the Daily Minor Planet, a daily news bulletin in your email inbox with the latest on asteroids. And Raymond Xie, a member of the AppsLab, the OAUX emerging technologies team, who was involved with the project, also wrote about his experience in his post, Oracle Volunteers and the Daily Minor Planet.

Oppstart av OUGN Integration SIG August 24th 2017 Oslo Norway

Det var lenge vært snakk om å starte opp en SIG for integrasjon innen OUGN – det er for sjelden å treffes en gang i året på Kielfergen.

Dette møtet er for å sparke dette i gang – og vi setter et sted og tid. Sysco har fått nye lokaler (fortsatt i samme bygg som Oracle, men det bygget som er nærmest Lysaker). Vi tar det i auditoriet – så kan vi by på litt mat / drikke.

Her kan vi diskutere SOA Suite, Oracle Service Bus, Integration Cloud Service, Process Cloud Service +++ de temaer som interesserer oss. Vi kan også trekke inn mer av mellomvare om det er aktuelt. Målet er å samle de som jobber med de samme tingene – slik at vi kan diskutere de utfordringer og suksesser vi har vært borti.

Vi har noen presentasjoner vi kan holde – eks:

* Automatiseringsstøtte i SOA Suite – Status Quo

* Erfaringer oppgradering 12.2.1 SOA / OSB

Dersom andre har forslag til presentasjoner de kan holde selv – eller temaer som de ønsker tatt opp – så si ifra.

Vi bør også få på plass en gjeng som er ansvarlig for å planlegge meetupene.

Our Final Episode – Oracle Business Rules by SOA Mythbusters

Introduction

In this article, we will dive into the discussion of how and where Oracle Business Rules fits into a Service Oriented Architecture. Furthermore, OBR’s evolution along Oracle’s FMW stack will be revisited, as well as its importance, benefits and the best practices to implement this product based on our own experience.

In many customers / projects we have faced a lot of resistance spearheaded by inaccurate conclusions around OBR’s scope, capabilities, performance and overall reliability as a component of Oracle SOA Suite.

This kind of concerns, can frequently lead organizations to underestimate the tool’s potential or even to abandon its use altogether, selecting instead suboptimal alternatives for business rules implementation and management.

The Myth:

“Oracle Business Rules is not a relevant tool within the FMW Stack; it is also risky to use, unfriendly to the final user and difficult to position adequately in a SOA Architecture”

Let’s get started

First and foremost, let’s take a look at how any business rule engines may fit into a technological architecture based on service-orientation principles.

It is very important to take in account that from a theoretical / methodological standpoint, “Rules Centralization” is in fact an established SOA design pattern, related to both the “Orchestration” and “Enterprise Service Bus” compound patterns.

Private Application Deployments in Oracle Process Cloud Service – New Feature! by Antonis Antoniou

The latest Oracle Process Cloud Service release in September 2016 (v16.3.5) added the support of two important functionalities; the "Event Based Gateway" for process branching and "Correlations" for process communication.
These capabilities have been available for quite some time in Oracle’s Process Cloud Service counterpart, the Oracle BPM Suite and have been described in detail in two of my blog posts; "Correlations in Oracle BPM 12c" and "Oracle BPM 12c Gateways (Part 5 of 5): Event-based Gateway".

Even though the functional concept is the exactly the same, whether used in an Oracle BPM Suite process or an Oracle Process Cloud Service process, there are yet some small differences, especially with the "Event Based Gateway" in Oracle Process Cloud Service.
So in this blog post we will see, in detail, how you can use the "Event-Based Gateway"to implement divergence and branching in your processes using events generated from external processes. Process communication will be implemented using "Correlations". Read the complete article here.

Editing Application Roles in Oracle Process Cloud Service by Lonneke Dikmans

The other day I was working on my demo of Oracle Process Cloud Service (PCS) for UKOUG Apps 2016.  After creating the application, I wanted to start working on the process. My use case fits an out of the box pattern nicely, so I started with "Form Approval with Integration Pattern" and PCS created a default process for me; with two swimlanes and a number of activities. The resulting process is shown below.

Every PCS application is provisioned with three standard roles:

  1. Process Owner. Users with this role have access to process activity history, can take actions, alter the process flow etc. Process owners typically manage deployed business processes and use metric analysis tools such as dashboards to monitor the business process.
  2. Process Reviewer. This role gives access to process activity, but process reviewers can not take actions on tasks or alter tasks flows.  Process reviewers are not participating but typically responsible for reporting on current process instance status.
  3. Analytics Viewer. assigned this role can create and view business analytics dashboards associated with the specified application.
