Upgrading Oracle SOA Suite from 11g to 12c by Danilo Schmiedel

clip_image002Today I’d like to share my presentation on upgrading Oracle SOA Suite from 11g to 12c. It contains information on how the product evolved the last couple of years. It also explains different upgrade strategies, the difference between in-flight upgrade and migration, important pre-upgrade tasks, the upgrade steps itself and post-upgrade steps.

Additionally it lists the experiences and upgrade results that we’ve achieved in two different scenarios: in-flight upgrade as well as migration. Get the presentation here and Watch his video 2 Minute Tip: Upgrading to Oracle SOA Suite 12c

Sensor Networks with Java (Part I) by Enzo

clip_image002End of last year I’ve started to build a little Sensor Network that I’ve placed in my house. I never thought that many people are interested in that but I was wrong, nearly every time I did a presentation about that topic many people asked me for a blog post about the project…and here it is 🙂
First of all this is not really about a Smart Home or something similar, this is simply a project to monitor data (temperature in my case). The original idea was monitoring multiple cold stores which seems to be something that is really useful 🙂
But because I didn’t had the cold stores I’ve decided to measure the temperature in nearly every room of our house.
The things I was interested in have been the behavior of the room temperature compared to the temperature outside. Does the temperature in the rooms follow the temperature outside of the house and how fast does it follow. To be able to compare those values I had to measure the conditions outside and in inside of the house.
Well measuring is one thing but you also have to analyze the data right? This means I needed to store the data somewhere and also needed to visualize the data somehow. Because I’m working from home I don’t have a big server room where I can put a computer that acts as a server so one other requirement was to use as many embedded devices as possible in the whole setup (means for communication, storage, etc.).
Wife factor
One very important (if not most important) factor in the whole project was what I call the "Wife factor". When I’ve started with the project I’ve used hardware like Raspberry Pi, BeagleBoneBlack and Arduino Yun to measure the temperature in different rooms in our house. It worked very nice BUT most of these devices have some kind of status led or I/O led which is blinking all the time. In addition all of those devices needed a power supply which means you have to place them close to a power plug. When my wife saw all these lights blinking and wires lying around she was not very amused.
I figured out that as long as she does not see the so called Sensor Nodes everything is fine.
Size matters
That said one thing was pretty clear, the Sensor Nodes have to be small and they should run on batteries…for months!!! I’ve tried different hardware like Raspberry Pi, Arduino Yun, Arduino + XBee but all of these approaches did not really work out well.
The biggest problem was the need for a power supply which limited the location I could place the Sensor Nodes. In the end I’ve took a closer look to the XBee itself which looks like follows… Read the complete article here.

Leverage the power of BI Publisher in Cloud integrations Hakan Biroglu

clip_image002By now we are all accustomed to running Applications in the Cloud and it has reached the next phase: extensibility and integrating of the Cloud Applications with other applications in our enterprise architecture. Oracle is investing a lot on this area with PaaS, IaaS, DBaaS, MWaaS, JaaS and everything else that ends with aaS. This will work fine if you are a Sales Cloud customer, where you have the ability to create custom objects, outbound calls, etc.
But what if you’re a Cloud ERP or HCM customer? Integration here is currently limited to file based extracts, file based loaders, spreadsheet loaders and web services that have been made available to be consumed externally. In real-time integrations you may be confronted with data needs that are not (yet) available by the web services provided in Cloud Applications, but you also do not the tooling to create custom web services for these needs. Or do you?
Inspired by this blog of FA Developer Relations, I would like to demonstrate how you can create custom real-time data extracts on nearly any data that resides in Fusion, using the PublicReportService
The PublicReportService is an externally available web service that provides you the ability to create, delete, update, schedule and run BI Publisher Reports. What makes this really interesting is the combination of creating your custom datamodel in BI Publisher and the operation to run a Report on this data.

Custom Datamodel

From the Navigator you can access BI Publisher via the menu item Reports and Analytics. From here create a new Report. Read the complete article here.

Simplify SaaS and On-Premises Integration by Using Oracle Fusion Middleware by Srikant Subramaniam

clip_image002With the increasing popularity of software as a service (SaaS), there is a key imperative to quickly, efficiently, and easily integrate the newer SaaS applications with their existing on-premise counterparts. This has proven to be especially challenging as each SaaS vendor enforces its own mechanisms for security, message delivery, and other integration aspects. As a result, it is not entirely surprising that 1 in 2 companies has abandoned the use of a cloud app in the last 3 years due to integration problems.
As a result, the context for this session was: given these challenges and the sobering statistics, how can customers be better equipped to avoid the pitfalls and endemic problems associated with this integration scenario.
We described how Oracle Fusion Middleware provides a single set of tools to handle all of these integration challenges. With the release of SOA Suite 12c, it is now possible to unify the disparate requirements challenges of mobile, cloud, and IoT into a single integration platform.  Also, the new Cloud Adapters in SOA Suite 12c simplify the task of developing and securing connectivity and enable users to focus on building the business logic for the integration processes.
A successful integration strategy involves much more than simple connectivity. Once the backend applications have been connected, the next step is to implement an access management solution that will allow users to access these applications in a secure manner. Oracle Identity and Access Management provides a single, secure point of entry where the user’s identity can be verified and access to enterprise resources can be managed to provide consistent role management, SSO and governance to cross- application processes and transactions.
